A lot of people follow this, but doesn't mean they are pleased with the way they live life, they go their whole lives following this “guideline”, but in all reality, people have to find out life for themselves."Nothing at last is sacred but the integrity of your own mind." - Ralph Waldo Emerson, from Self-Reliance. Ralph waldo emerson believed in self reliance and this is exactly what Mcandless thought was the path to a happy life. Do what you want to do and live the way you want to live, but you have to find your passion. I think Chris tried to find happiness on his own terms but was stupid in the way he went about it. The only downfall of this argument is at the end of his life he realized that relationships were important in life, this was the beginning of the end for McCandless as it was too late to go back to
