Before the Industrial Revolution the need for coal was small but as the Industrial Revolution moved along the need for coal was great. So in result of that miners had to go deeper for more coal. Problems of the mines were the mines were very unsafe and would often times collapse which was expected as they were held up by wooden props. Mines could also flood which was time consuming because you couldn’t go any deeper. Since there were explosive gasses in these mines a spark from a miner’s pickaxe could mean big problems. Children in the mines probably had the hardest job of everyone. Children would have to push and pull mine carts filled with coal all the way to the top sometimes even being as long as 2 miles. Other children would sit in the dark with a candle and open and shut a wooden door to let in and out of the mine sometimes for hours with no one to interact with.
