Cause and effect essay

When I was 9 years old, I came to the United States without knowing any Enlish at all. At first it was dificult because I didn’t understand any word. It was hard to understand my teachers, so then I had to sit at the back of the room with another teacher. Other children laughed at me because I coulndt read. Whenever I was at home, I used to get books to read and I spend at least an hour reading. Secondly, I also had to attend a tutoring class after school. I never liked to stay after school. It was embarrasing for me because none of my friends had to stay. I always felt less than my classmates. I had many problems with writing. I couldn’t spell any word correctly the first timeas others did. Everything seemed to be dificult for me.

Next, as I started to learn my second language, I also had difficulties speaking it. When I was in sixth grade, I was embarrast to talk. I never wanted to ask my teacher permission for anything. I was hard for me to ask for something. I always thought that if I talked everyone would laugh at me. When I used to hang out with my friends, they always talked in English to each other, but they spoke in Spanish to me. Sometimes when they spoke English I could understand what they were saying, but sometimes it was difficult. I always tried to say at least a word. I was scared of talking this second language. Even when I had presentations, I used to get nervous and wanted to cry. However, I still had to do my presentations and deal with my embarrastness.

Finally, the effect of not knowing my second languge of English, not knowing how to read, write, speak it had become better. After all the embarrasment I passed when I came to El Centro CA, I had the chance to speak a second language. I attended school programs to help me develop my English skills. For instance, I attended tutoring, ESL classes in Junior High, and summer school. Even though I didn’t like them, I’m

Throughout my childhood, the idea of having a college education was greatly stressed. As a result, it was my duty as the next generational child, to excel in my studies and achieve a life of prosperity and success. Learning became the basic foundation of my growth. Therefore, my youth was overtaken by many hours spent reading and writing what was known to be correct "Standard" English. I first found this to be a great shortcoming, but as I grew older, I began to realize the many rewards acquired by having the ability to be literate.…

As an immigrant person who was raised overseas, the language barrier was my biggest challenge that I have faced in my life. As a child, I grew up learning Arabic and French as my second language. I have always loved to write in my native language. I loved how I can express myself and my feelings without even saying them out loud. “But, can I still do this?” a question that was always driving me hazy. A new language means…

Learning English was neither easy nor hard because I was in the environment in people who speak English; everything around me speaks English. As consequences for all the hard work, I did not have any time to do enough extra-curriculums or even join sport team in high school; for instant: NMHS (National Math Honor Society), NSHS (National Math Honor Society), biomedical club, and finally the soccer team or the tennis team. I made these decisions, so I can finish high school in four years with the best grades and needed knowledge possible. In the end of my sophomore year, I finish the ESOL program in the first two years: I went from ESOL 2 in 9th grade to ESOL 4 in 10th grade, finishing the ESOL program with an improvement of my English…

In an evening spent at a local park, I observed two toddlers playing on the playground. Both toddlers were about the same size and height, and they were seemingly about two years of age. These two children stood out to me because though they seemed about the same age, their behavior on the playground was very different. As I observed, both subtle and large differences began to make themselves apparent.…

This great country on the federal, state, and local level needs to invest more money in educating its citizens. In the past the United States boasted a higher percentage of technically trained, well educated, top of their field professionals to fulfill the needs of not only this great country, but those of the rest of the world too. However those days seem to be over. Today most highly technical and intellectual jobs such as engineering, chemistry, physics, and research doctors are held by individuals who were educated elsewhere. Students in the United States test among the lowest in the world in the basic skills of math, science, and English. It is evident that educating the Americans of the future generation has somehow gotten way too low on this country’s priority list. We have done a poor job of properly educating our citizens in recent years to be able to compete in the world market of tomorrow. The United States should pass legislature mandating higher pay for K-12 teachers, higher test scoring standards for schools, teachers, and students, smaller classrooms, and colleges should start actively recruiting prospective students in public schools at the elementary age, which is much earlier than they do today.…

He tries to connect to pieces together flat but struggles, he then walks to the music area and grabs the bells. He stacks bells on top of each other and then puts them back in the basket. In second grade I had a fair level of Spanish reading, but to kill my life I had to learn English, how devastating, it took me two days to learn the ABC’s in English. I understood nothing of written English. My teacher started giving me small lessons on it; I loathed English so much I wanted to give up. In fourth grade, I started to write essays which took me for ever, and I was so deeply embarrassed, because I would get my papers basically all in red of corrections. As time passed I hated books more and more, every time I would have to read I would get…

As I said above, It is still terrible, I didn’t know how to speak English at all. I have always been studying while working in two or more part time jobs, I always cursed my situation for why I had to live this hard. But recently I found that my situation was very normal after learned few people who have studied in a much more difficult environment than myself and have become successful writers. By the 1960s, Alexie was living with his family on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Even his family were poor, Alexie’s father always read and inspired to Alexie to read. There was a lot of racial discrimination, Alexie was expected to fail and remain uneducated. He writes, “A smart Indian is a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and non-Indians alike. I fought with my classmates on a daily basis. They wanted me to stay quiet when the non-Indian teacher asked for answers, for volunteers, for help. We were Indian children expected to be stupid” (Alexie 17). Alexie was not frustrated by his situation and able to save his own life. He broke the stereotype of being just another uneducated Indian…

I observed a 5-year-old male named Aiden in his home. Aiden is my brother’s son, with his girlfriend of almost 6-years. I chose to do a naturalistic observation, watching him interact with his older sister who is 6-years old. Aiden is of average height and weight for a boy his age (world, 2008). He receives good grades in school and is a well-behaved child. Aiden currently lives with his mother, father, and 6 –year-old sister. The house they live in is a three-bedroom, with a large backyard. Each child has their own bedroom and get to express themselves daily. The mother is a LVN nurse at a local hospital and has to work all the time, sometimes over night. My brother is a stay at home dad that takes care of getting the children fed and to bed on time and up and ready for school in the morning and whenever they are home makes sure they do their homework and gets washed up for dinner. Aiden enjoys playing video games and playing with action figures, as well as playing with his sister.…
