Chief's Academy Reflection
The Chiefs Academy is a five week moment in time to take your anchors off and reflect on yourself. There are lessons to learn from self-reflection and that moment when you realize the tools and the network you were given and you ask yourself what you will build with this network and innovative tools. The Chiefs academy gave you a personal perspective and outlook by using goals and values, the LPI assessment, and coaching. My goal of the Chiefs academy was to check the box in order to fill the requirement to advance to Senior Chief. After the first week I soon realized that this was not a box to check, but a lesson on setting the goal about making Senior Chief and what tools I could utilize to ensure its success. I reflect back now and wonder where the lessons on coaching would have benefited myself and others in the beginning of my career. When I reflect back after coaching class, there were times when I needed a coach not a mentor. I had several mentors who I thought had all the answers and I accepted that was all there was. Through this class I learned I had been doing the exact same, since that is how I was trained. I will definitely implement this tool when I return to my unit, because I believe in the importance of this. I remember someone once saying it’s all in the way you present it. I realize now the importance of this and it will change the way I interact with my difficult boss, junior members, and fellow peers them. In closing, The Chiefs Academy is not a box to check it’s a time where you had self-reflection and peer interaction.
