The role of Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is very important in nursing with a healthcare environment that is being altered by technological innovation. It will be essential for CNO’s to find ways to advance nursing practice through innovate changes that comes from nursing informatics. Simpson’s (2013) article explains that Chief Nurse Executives (CNEs) find themselves ill prepared to debate with their physician counterparts about the functions of the clinical information systems. It will be important that the CNIO and the CNO collaborate to ensure that nurse leaders are well educated on technological changes so that the administration can effectively implement innovation into patient care areas to improve outcomes. The CNIO will have most knowledge on current technologies which can help the organization. This means the CNO and the CNIO need to work closely together to integrate these innovate technologies which further clinician efficiencies and improve patient care (Kirby, 2015). The CNIO can provide the perspective to drive workflow efficiencies, eliminate duplication, and improve transition of care across an integrated organization. This perspective needs to be communicated to the CNO for proper implementation in the system. Innovation leadership and project manager are different. Innovation leaderships describes the administrator and the approach to completing assignments (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2015). Project manager is responsible for certain tasks to be completed but the manager does not need to use innovation leadership idea. Innovation leader can be a project manager. I believe the best fit for nurse administrator is innovation leadership. Implementing a culture within the organization of innovation is very important. Innovative leaders can come up with solutions to unprecedented situations when implementing new technological products. Recently in my Emergency Department, a new technological innovation is being implemented as a mobile application that helps register patients, update patients, and share test results. This new mobile application idea came from the ED nurse charge nurse meeting which includes the manager, director, and charge nurses. Since the culture at this facility support innovative ideas, it makes implementation of a mobile application feasible and easy. This mobile application helps improve communication, patient satisfaction, patient safety and overall care for the patient. In the future, innovative leadership will be an important part of the healthcare

    The impact of the Institute of Medicine report on nursing education suggests the nursing profession should have a more advanced education system providing limitless opportunities for growth. The future of nursing providing care to the entire realm of health care, especially primary care and community settings, will be determined by the evolution of a new educational system. The IOM report states that sixty percent of hospital employed nurses will be impacted by the Affordable Care Act because of the transition of patients to primary and community health care.
