Chicken Wing Dissection
Chicken Wing Dissection
The chicken wing dissection was very helpful in understanding not only the muscular system but also the skeletal system. We looked at both the bone and the muscles of the chicken wing. We noticed many different things that we had been studying in class. In this dissection we studied structure and function of a chicken wing, which is comparable to that of the human arm.
First, we removed the skin of the wing with the tools provided for us. We examined yellowish tissue clumped together beneath the skin. This was fat tissue. The fat tissue was sticky and gross feeling. Under the fat tissue were the muscles. We examined the biceps brachii and the triceps brachii. These are the muscles that bend and straighten the elbow joint.
Next, we located the tendons. The tendons were shiny and white tissues at the ends of the muscles that attached the muscles to the bones. There were five bones in a wing. The bones we identified were the humerus, ulna, radius, shoulder joint, and the elbow joint. We bent and straightened the elbow joint to observe how the bones fit together and examined it to identify the ligaments. We also noticed the veins and how they were all connected; we could push the blood through one vein and it would come out through the other. This dissection helped the class to understand how the muscles, tendons, and ligaments play roles in the wing’s movement.
Although many differences exist between the anatomy of humans and chickens, it is still helpful to observe and compare the different components between them. I enjoyed doing the dissection very much because instead of just learning the muscular and skeletal system from the book we actually learned it hands on. I am a very hands on learner; I do better when I’m not just learning information from a

A tendon is a tough band of fibrous connective tissue that usually connects muscle to bone and is capable of withstanding tension. A joint is the location at which two or more bones make contact. A ligament is a short band of tough fibrous dense regular connective tissue composed mainly of long, stringy collagen fibers. Ligaments connect bones to other bones to form a joint.…

(a.) In direct or fleshy attachments, the epimysium of the muscle is fused to the periosteum of a bone or perichondrium of a cartilage. In indirect attachments, the muscle’s connective tissue wrappings extend beyond the muscle either as a ropelike tendon or as a sheet like aponeurosis. The tendon or aponeurosis anchors the muscle to the connective tissue covering of a skeletal element (bone or cartilage) or to the fascia of other muscles. (b.) a tendon is a cord of dense fibrous tissue attaching muscle to the bone, and aponeurosis is fibrous or membranous sheet connecting a muscle and the part it moves.…

Owl pellets are masses of bone, teeth, hair, feathers and exoskeletons of various animals preyed upon by raptors, or birds of prey. Owls have weak stomach muscles that form undigested bones, feathers, and fur. Because they can’t break those things down they regurgitate them in the form of a ball called a pellet. Owls produce these pellets and regurgitated them approximately 20 hours after eating. The purpose of this lab is to dissect an owl’s pellet and investigate what was on that singular owl’s diet. We are first to do this by identifying the bones of the animals the owl eat.…

The styliform falciform ligament attaches to the styliform cartilage distal to its hinge. Because the falciform bone in flying squirrels is relatively mobile, this anatomical arrangement should allow the abductor of the thumb to pull the falciform bone toward the radial side of the hand, which in turn will pull on the styliform falciform ligament and extend the cartilage to support the curved wing tip. Researchers tested this in preserved specimens of Petaurista and in both preserved and fresh specimens of Glaucomys by pulling on the tendon of the abductor pollicis longus to simulate flexion of this muscle. With the hand abducted and dorsiflexed, a pull on the tendon of the abductor caused the wing tip to extend and to be held in a normal gliding position. The flexor carpi ulnaris muscle, innervated by the ulnar nerve, takes origin by two heads one from the medial side of the proximal end of the ulna and one from the medial epicondyle of the…
