Chi Li Slays The Serpent

Chi Li Slays the Serpent

1. I think that Chi Li would’ve been laughed at by her family and peers for trying to do what some of the most trained men couldn’t complete, killing the serpent. By telling her parents she was going to volunteer it made it seem like she was a hero even if she cannot kill the monster.

2. Their favorite child out of all girls, was about to attempt to kill a beast that no one has been able to do. I believe her parents wouldn’t have been more encouraging they didn’t even want her going to volunteer in the first place.

3. Bravery, she volunteers herself up to save the greater good. Chi Li is also very intelligent. She was able to trick the Serpent into not noticing her then with her mighty strength slays the beast.

4. More support. They gave her the mental strength needed to go through with this. If it wasn’t for her faith I don’t believe she could’ve completed this task. 5. She believed that these victims were eaten because they didn’t put up a fight with the serpent. They just went willingly and hopelessly. Chi Li is unusual because she is one of the only women that did try and put up a fight.

6. This reveals that the society at the time was more afraid of this serpent than they were anything else. They were willing to give up their own people rather than go slay this beast.

    3. In your opinion, could this tragedy have been prevented? If so, how? In this case I really don’t know the specifics of this particular case, because there are so many missing pieces between the pre-op and post-op that I’m unsure of how this actually happened to determine if this tragedy could have been prevented. One tragic event in China, which was the Tiananmen square massacre sparked the curiosity of Grace specially for the safety of Chun-mei during that event. For the first time in her life she asked a question to Kevin her adoptive dad about Chun-mei. An example is a scene that happened in the book, ”What about Chun-mei?” I asked. “I’m sure she’s alright, too.” our eyes met briefly. I look away. It was the first time I had said the name Chun-mei without anger. Because of this tragic event, it was the very first time Grace thought about the safety of her mother Chun-mei. It also sparked her interest on what is happening in China even though she hated her cultural heritage when she was a child. A few years have passed, Grace started to learn how to speak and write Mandarin with the help of Mr. Frank. After years of learning she started to appreciate the idea of being able to speak in another language Grace quoted that “Many times, I basked in the sense of superiority it gave me.” (Ting Xing Ye 121). Grace starts to appreciate the beauty and benefit of speaking Mandarin even though she abominated her culture when she was a child. She starts to feel superior of being able to speak Chinese since she is the only person in Milford that can speak it. Grace hated the idea of stereotyping other Asians saying they're all the same and she classifies all of them are different,…

    2. While the Lees recognized that Lia had an illness, I do not believe that they recognized the severity of her problems. One the one hand, the understood that it was a dangerous illness, but on the other hand, the Hmong believed that qaug dab peg “singles him out as a person of consequence” (Fadiman, 1997, p. 21). At times, the Lees believed that Lia’s epilepsy wasn’t as much of a medical problem as a gift. Fadiman tells us, “They therefore hoped, at least most of the time, that the qaug dab peg could be healed” (p. 22). So while they recognized that Lia was sick, they also had hope that she could be cured. Their hope was that if the spirits decided to keep hold of Lia, that long-term she would become a Tvix neeb, a “person with a healing spirit” (as cited in Fadiman, 1997, p. 21). If she did not become a Tvix neeb, then their hope was that the sickness would be short-term. It seems that either way, they had no idea what the future held for Lia. They could only hope for the best.…

The selection we read starting on page 62 of the “Ways of Reading” textbook, “Entering the Serpent” by Gloria Anzaldua, started out with a dangerous encounter between Prieta and a rattle snake. Prieta was out in the cotton fields chopping cotton with her mother when she heard the distinctive rattle. The snake lunged out at her and sank it’s fangs through her boots and into her flesh. Prieta's mother quickly came to the rescue swinging her hoe high over her head and then down onto the snake. When the snake was no longer a danger to Prieta or anyone else Prieta’s mother went back to work. Prieta knew exactly what to do having grown up among the snakes and she quickly went to work cutting ex.’s centered on the holes created by the fangs of the great sake and sucking the venom out.…
