Democritus was born in 460 BCE (estimated) in Abdera, Thrace. Democritus also known as the “Laughing Philosopher”. His theory was the matter could not be divided into smaller and smaller pieces forever, eventually the smallest possible piece would be obtained, and the piece would be invisible. He named the small piece of matter “atomos” meaning “not to be cut”. But as the time continued Aristotle, another Greek philosopher, thought that the atomic theory was worthless and then dismissed it. He on other hand, Aristotle was born in 384 BCE in Stagira, Greece. Aristolote mainly believed in the ultimate reality in physical objects. He made Genus and Species possible for us today. Aristotle famously rejected Plato’s theory of forms that object exist independantly. Aristotle argued that they can not exist apart. Plato another greek philospher believed the opposite as Aristotle. Also plato was Aristotle teacher at the Acadamy at the time.
It wasent untill 2000 years after no one questioned the theory of atoms, untill the early 1800’s. John Dalton was born in 1766 in Cumberland, England. Dalton made many experiment strictly to atom study even though he had no idea what is was. He is most known for the extensive research on atoms. He proposed a table of atomic weights for the number of the known element. This image is Dalton’s table of elements and the number of elemental combinations described in his 1808 publication ‘New System of Chemical Philosophy’. It also shows the molecular of formula of known gases. His theory is all matter is made of atoms and unchangeable and indestructible. Also all atoms are given an element are identical in mass and properties. The theory continued; he believed that a chemical reaction was rearranged atoms and that compounds are formed by combination by two or more atoms.

Democritus was a philosopher born at Abdera in Thrace around 460 BC; he lived to be very old but died at an unknown date. He was a student of Leucippus, and co-originator of the belief that all matter is made up of various imperishable indivisible elements which he called atoms. It is virtually impossible to tell which of these ideas were unique to Democritus, and which are attributable to Leucippus. Democritus is also the first philosopher we know to realize that what we perceive as the Milky Way is the light of distant stars. Other Philosophers, including later Aristotle, argued against this. Democritus was among the first to propose that the universe contains many worlds, some of them inhabited.…

Democritus was a Greek Philosopher born 460 B.C. in the city of Abdera, and died 370 B.C. He was born into a wealthy family and traveled the world extensively. He was known as the “laughing” philosopher, or the “happy” philosopher because he would constantly mock people, and laugh incessantly about his own jibes. Throughout his life he wrote over 70 books, however very few pages have survived the years. Some have said that Democritus blinded himself to better understand his own mind, however, because he had over 70 writings these conceptions of Democritus have been discredited. Democritus studied natural philosophy under his mentor Leucippus, who had a huge affect on Democritus's writings and publications as they were very similar to Leucippus own theories. It is difficult to distinguish whose theories belonged to who because very few documents have survived. However Democritus has been credited with most of them. His major contributions to science is his atomic theory, which was the basis on which modern atomic theory was developed.(http://www.iep.utm.edu/democrit/)…

John Dalton: revived/revised D’s ideas called: Dalton’s Atomic theory which basically states that all matter are composed of extremely tiny atoms, all atoms of a given element are identical (same size, mass, and chemical properties), atoms cannot be created, divided into smaller particles, or destroyed (similar to the Law of Conservation of Mass), different atoms combine in simple whole-number ratios to form compounds (see below), in a chemical reaction, atoms are separated, combined, or rearranged.…

After John Dalton published his New System of Chemical Philosophy, more and more additions to the knowledge of chemistry were revealed. In 1811, Avogadro published an article in Journal de physique that clearly drew the distinction between the molecule and the atom. He pointed out that Dalton had confused the concepts of atoms and molecules. The "atoms" of nitrogen and oxygen are in reality "molecules" containing…

Democritus was an Ancient Greek pre-Socratic philosopher of Ancient Greece. He along with Leucippus were atomic theorists who proposed during the fifth century B.C that 1. Matter is composed of atoms separated by empty space by which atoms move. 2.Atoms are solid, homogeneous, indivisible, and unchanging. Democritus knew that if he took a rock and chisel it in half, that both halves would characteristically have the same properties as the whole. He rationalized that if he was to continue to cut the rock into smaller pieces it would get to a point where the pieces would be so tiny that they would become indivisible. He formulated these small pieces of particles (matter) as "atomos" which is deprived from the Greek word indivisible. He believed…

It took many scientists and philosophers hundreds even thousands of years to come up with an accurate atomic theory. For nearly 2,000 years science was unable to come up with experiments that were able to test and put forth the theories made up by Democritus which was a fifth century B.C. Greek philosopher. In 1803, John Dalton, who viewed the atom as a small solid sphere, and is credited for the developing of the first coherent atomic theory was now in the picture. This all led to the the first periodic table of the elements, and the history of the atom.…

An ionic compound forms from a nonmetal and metal element. A covalent compound is formed by two non metal elements. A metallic compound is formed by two metal elements. Metallic compounds have generally high melting points, are loose and flexible with their electrons, conduct electricity well, and have low solubility in water. Ionic compounds are generally crystals, have a high melting point, and usually have high solubility in water and conduct electricity well when dissolved in water. Covalent compounds have individual molecules, have a low melting point, and do not conduct electricity, and their solubility in water depends on the type of covalent bond.…
