Chemical Periodicity

ABSTRACT
The experiment chemical periodicity shows the properties and reactions belonging to group IA, IIA, and IVA. Proper procedures and observations were done to determine the solubility, physical state, color, and appearance of the compounds namely Li2CO3, Na2CO3, K2CO3, CaCO3, and BaCO3. The results shows that Li2CO3, Na2CO3, K2CO3 were soluble in water, while MgCO3, CaCO3,and BaCO3 were not soluble. All of these compounds were color white, they are in solid form, and their appearance were powder like. The sample from Group IVA Elements ( C, Sn, Si, and Pb) were also in solid form. The color and appearance of Carbon(C) are black, dull and rocklike, tin(Sn) was silver and shiny, silicon(Si) was white and powdery, lead(Pb) was gray and dull and powder like. For the Group IIA Metal Oxides, MgO and CaO were tested of their solubility and reaction to Litmus paper. Both of the compounds were soluble in water and remained blue in reaction to blue litmus paper. The compounds turned to blue in reaction to red litmus paper. This means that the compounds are bases.

I. INTRODUCTION Periodicity can be defined as to the trends or recurring variations in element, properties with increasing atomic number. Periodicity is caused by regular and predictable variations in element atomic structure (Helminstein 2013). It was Mendeleev who arranged the elements in order of increasing mass. Mendeleev was able to predict where there were 'holes ' in his table, or elements yet to be discovered. The history of periodicity started in the middle of the last century chemists generally understood that chemical elements can be grouped together in separate classes according to obvious similarities or dissimilarities in their properties. Thus, flammable alkali metals (that form stable cations) can be naturally separated from poisonous halogens (that

Dmitri Mendeleev created the periodic table on March 6, 1869 (almost 100 years, to the day, before my birthdayJ) based on the atomic weights of the elements. Many elements were missing then, but he left spaces for them because he thought one day they might be discovered. Now the periodic table is arranged by the element’s atomic number and many other trends from it can provide valuable information to scientists. When information is arranged in a certain order it is called periodicity. Your assignment is to create your own periodic table using periodicity and similar trends as found in the modern periodic table.…

In the lab 1 experiment, the objective was to observed properties of various chemical reactions between twelve different basic compounds. Each reaction revealed chemical properties consisting of color change, CO2 gas formation, and/or precipitate formation. Certain reactions made it possible to distinguish between an acid and a base. Through the results of this experiment, chemical properties observed in the reactions could be used to associate similar chemical substances and properties in household products.…

In this lab we evaluate the solubility of compounds of iron, copper, zinc, and mercury in both water and acid. Coming into the lab we know that iron, copper, and zinc are all found in the the same row of the periodic table, while zinc and mercury are found in the same column. The transition metals are found in groups 3 to 12 and periods 4 to 6. Rows are known as periods and columns are known as groups. They share characteristics, such as being good conductors of electricity, and having a shiny appearance. This experiment will further our knowledge of the organization of the periodic table and the patterns found within in it, in reference to chemical similarities between elements. This experiment is important because it puts us in the position of discovering similarities between this group of elements.…

From the title of this book, I could infer that the book will be about how the elements were discovered, the origin of their names and the people who discovered each element that is now a part of the periodic table. The author of the book, Hugh Aldersey-Williams, must be an individual of great knowledge and has a deep interest and understanding of chemistry—or else he would have never wrote this book. In this book, I expect that I would be able to learn how the ancients used the elements to improve their way of life, and how our advancements in technology relate to our understanding of the elements.…

Here are some questions about the elements, their properties, and periodicity. In each case, the correct answer is the name of an element (one of the two given). Write the answer in the appropriate space at the right, placing the first letter in the first blank. There are more than enough blanks to fit either element name, so the number of letters in the name cannot be used as a clue. When the puzzle is complete, the Periodic Law will be displayed in the highlighted column.( by Bronwyn J. Nelson, Fairfield High School, Fairfield, Ohio.)…

Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834-1907) was a Russian chemist famous for his formulation of classification of elements, or what is now called the Periodic Table of Elements (2011). On 6 March 1869, Mendeleev made a formal presentation to the Russian Chemical Society, titled “The Dependence between the Properties of the Atomic Weights of the Elements”, which described elements according to both atomic weight and valence. This presentation stated that: the elements, if arranged according to their atomic weight, exhibit an apparent periodicity of properties; elements which are similar in regards to their chemical properties have atomic weights which are either of nearly the same value (e.g., Pt, Ir, Os) or which increase regularly (e.g., K, Rb, Cs); the arrangement of the elements in groups of elements in the order of their atomic weights corresponds to their so-called valence’s, as well as, to some extent, their distinctive chemical properties; as is apparent among other series in that of Li, Be, B, C, N, O, and F; the elements which are the most widely diffused have small atomic weights; and that the magnitude of the atomic weight determines the character of the element, just as the magnitude of the molecule determines the character of a compound body (2011).…

The Disappearing Spoon by Sam Kean, examines each of the elements on the periodic table. The Disappearing Spoon focuses on the history of the periodic table by recounting stories about each element on the table, and the scientist that discovered it. For each element, Kean provides an extensive backstory about its origin, the common (or uncommon) uses of the element, and other interesting tidbits. The author begins the novel with a general physical description of the periodic table as a whole; he discusses the names of the groups of elements and their corresponding properties, atoms and their three major sub-particles, the activity of electrons, and the organization of the table. Next, Sam Keane shares specific details about both drama involved…

Our task was to look over 6 properties of the elements and determine if they follow a periodic trend or if they do not. A periodic trend increases or decreases across both a period and down a group. A quasi-periodic trend does not follow a periodic trend. As you go across each period of the Periodic Table of Elements, the reactivity of elements gradually decreases, as the atomic mass increases. The fewer valence electrons an atom holds, the less stable it becomes and the more likely it is to react, which is why elements in the beginning are more reactive.…
