2. Identify each unknown from Part One of the lab and briefly explain why you identified each unknown as you did.
Unknown 1 was sodium because the flame was yellow. Unknown 2 was Potassium because flame was blue.
Part Two (Spectroscopy):
1. Create and complete a data table for Part Two of the lab. It should include the name of the element, the colors, and the wavelength values of the observed lines.

2. Describe the line spectrum of the star. Give the color and wavelength value of the five brightest lines in the spectrum.
There was 18 different lines of the spectrum of the star. Some where more thick than others. The spectrum ranged from violet to dark red. Five brightest lines are blue 440nm, green 500nm, violet 404nm, violet 410nm, violet/blue 420nm.

Conclusion:
1. Explain, in your own words, why different elements produce different colors of light when heated. Different elements produce different colors of light when heated because they are able to get to a different energy state, and then they lose energy from heat and the flame changes color.

2. Why do you think

As the substance heats up, the electrons gain energy from the flame to move to a higher level of energy. At this higher energy level, the electrons become unstable and start to come back down to the “ground state” (lower energy levels). As this happens, the electrons in the substance release a certain amount of energy, which we see as a color…

For the unknown light source, it had almost every color, so it might have been be mercury because they have similar color beams and their color from the naked eye appeared as purple, which mercury, a light blue, is very close to in terms of it's color on the spectrum. For the unknown flame crystals, it may NH4+ because the colors that appeared are very similar to the crystals. Next, chemicals have to be heated in the flame for the color to emit because heat adds energy to the substance making the electrons more excited, allowing for the electrons to transition faster. Then, the method of lighting the substance on fire is far better than using the spectroscope. Not only does the fire burn it's colors more obvious, but also, light pollution tremendously…
