Chaucer Parody
Chaucer Parody: The General Prologue Here begins the Tales of Bama Bound Orientation. Beginning in May when High Schools begin to grace seniors with the sweet ceremony of graduation and each student has declared and committed to their future universities. When high school principals bid their seniors adieu and their caps have been thrown; they go on trips to these universities in places near and far. Of those places is in the state of Alabama, and new students make their way to Tuscaloosa, to seek a higher education and help from those upperclassmen who volunteer as Avanti orientation leaders to guide students on their upcoming college years. One day, during this month of May, I myself was going on this trip to orientation. As I waited in the lobby of the Ferg, I was called into my small group session, it happened that in my group were seven other students who were all joined together by the number on our name tags, two. All of the students were freshmen, coming to The University of Alabama for the first time, and when the group leaders rounded us together, we all conversed as we walked to Gorgas 205 to begin our orientation journey. While we had the time, I studied each if the students who would become my future classmates one by one. I think it is only appropriate for me to take the time to describe them too you. The impression they gave, where they came from, and how they were dressed. I will begin with the football player. There was a football player who was recruited by Nick Saban himself and was a worthy player, strong, fast, and very sportsmanlike. He had lead his high school to a state championship three years in a row, and was recruited by every school from the north to the south, but it was no surprise he chose Alabama. He was regarded by ESPN as the top college freshmen player, and had many times made national news for his achievements. He worked to defend Alabama football in the preseason and was a crucial player in the Ole Miss and Louisiana

He was instantly liked because of his easy going manner. He played basketball for the Iola Bulldogs. They were a Class 2A school during his last two years there. "He'd keep practices real light," said Iola's basketball coach then, Rob Stewart. "I'd get on him, and he'd give me the goofy smile." As a junior Chris averaged a triple double. This did not get him much attention. His coach mailed out copies of his box score after his first game of his senior year. He received a lot of replies. The field of interested colleges was greatly reduced because of his grades. Because of this Chris chose to go to Blinn College where he played for Coach Joe Curl. Coach Curl left and things did not go well with the new coach. Chris ended up quitting basketball before…

Thank you for your post. Your introductory story of the football player provided your readers with a wonderful insight into the dedication and compassion that you bring to your students. A student who is so dedicated to his sport and yet he called you “coach” (Davis, 2015) shows the tremendous value that you brought to this student, as well as to place of honor that he had for you.…

Through the structure of her speech, Chaucer characterizes the Wife of Bath as loquacious. When the she goes on many tangents as she is trying to get a point across, it becomes apparent that the Wife of Bath is a character that loves to talk. For example when she is telling her tale and digresses to talk about Ovid, she says, “If you wish to hear the rest of the tale, [...] When this knight whom this tale specially concerns.” (l 126-127). It is clear that she not only got sidetracked by interjecting another story into her original one, but realizes it as well. The way the author organizes her speech by making her digress shows that she has a lot to say and likes to say it. The structure of deviating from her from her course of conversation…

Brian Jenkins, before becoming a coach and teacher at hononegah, played collegiate football and received looks from multiple NFL teams. He did not achieve this by his sheer talent level but from his work ethic and drive. Coach Jenkins is not your college football stereotype: 6’2”, 225 pounds; Jenkins is 5’9” and about 180 pounds. Out of highschool, he was an unrecruited walk on and had to work his way onto the game field. Every summer during college he…

In the months after his high school graduation, Mark was sent off to Central College in Pella, Iowa. There, he participated in football and got a job outside of his studies. To support himself, Mark worked as a manager at Pizza Hut for all four years he attended school. When I asked about his life as an undergrad, he told me going off to college provided some of the best years of his life. However, having to show up to every practice and event for football while trying to hold down a job and pay tuition proved to be more challenging he expected. Two years after he arrived, Mark decided to retire from the Central College team and transfer to the University of Iowa, home of the black and gold. In the course of this transition, Mark learned how to pay bills, take money, and balance his time accordingly. After his graduation in 1985, Mark was hired to become a head football and baseball coach at a high school in Ventura,…

Richard Sherman, a premier athlete in the NFL, is what one would want to see in a student athlete. In high school, he was the salutatorian(second in his class) and graduated with a 4.2 GPA, while putting in the demanding hours required to be an elite athlete. He attended Stanford and continued his academic excellence, while maintaining that NFL prospect status. In an interview, Sherman was asked his stance on college athlete treatment: “While student athletes are being offered a free education, they do not have the time or enough opportunities to take advantage of that education. These athletes are being cut short and not getting what they deserve.” They are given a scholarship for school, yet they are expected…

Eagle’s ASB (Associated Student Body) has been a positive influence for the school culture now and in the past. From planning activities to recognizing students for academic and behavioral achievements, ASB has really become the leading organization for our school. This year, students applied, interviewed, and only few were chosen to represent our site. As a result, they have given the whole student body the opportunity to review school-wide policies, organize events, open a student store, and create fund raising opportunities including our first ever school year book. One type will be to tell how the two characters' own qualities (That is reflected in the prologues.) are reflecting upon the society of Chaucer’s time. Women in the medieval times were cast into very distinct roles. There was a strict code of conduct that was followed. They were to be submissive to their husbands and follow their lead. A woman's place was also in the home and the responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, sewing, etc. fell into their domain. Women who deviated from these cultural-set norms made for interesting characters. Chaucer's use of women and their overstepping their boundaries and typical roles in society make them most memorable.…

Simply put, I had no baggage with these people; I did not have to account for any actions of the past. As I lugged my bags up to the fourth floor of the Georgetown LXR dormitory for the start of the JSA Summer School, I imagined the people I was going to meet: my roommate, my floor-mates, and my classmates. Just before I entered my room, I saw a student walking out of the room across from mine. With a tremor in my voice, I introduced myself to him, shook his hand, then retreated to my room. That evening, we met for the first time as an RA group and introduced ourselves to each other. For the first time in my life, I introduced myself as ‘AP,’ my nickname, rather than ‘Apurv,’ my given name. I was relieved after our introductions were finished,…

When I walked into my comp II for the first time, I looked around and saw that I did not know anyone in my class. So I wondered where and who to sit by. Since class about to start it did not matter where I chose to sit because as I mentioned, I did not know any of my classmates personally. When Mrs. Henry assigned us to get into groups to get to know the people in our specific groups, I saw this as an opportunity to change the fact of me not knowing anyone. I don’t mind talking to people to get to know them. You never know what you can get from making new relationships. This is what this paper is all about, I’m going to share on what all I have learned about the people in my group. I hope that you also get to know about my fellow…
