According to an article appearing on jpost.com (“Egypt's Grand Mufti warns Charlie Hebdo against publishing new Mohammad caricature”), Muslim leaders around the world are sending warnings to the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo to not publish a cover egregiously disrespecting the Muslim icon, Mohammed.

The office of Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam said, “This edition will cause a new wave of hatred in French and Western society in general and what the magazine is doing does not serve coexistence or a dialog between civilizations.”

Charlie Hebdo published this article because, according to a BBC article there was a shooting in Paris,

I am not saying that death is the answer to anything by any means but, when a magazine is directly poking at a bear in a loose cage, over and over again, is it surprising when there is some sort of reaction?

Charlie Hebdo should not be printing covers that purposely diminish the Muslim religion’s prophet, nor any religion for that matter.

Growing up as a Catholic I did not know about any other religions. Catholics are taught from a young age that this is how it is, do not question it and live by it. I am now not so religious.

I believe that everyone should believe what he or she wants to believe. Whether that is worshiping a pig, or bowing down to a cat. The world is not black and white anymore. It is full of differing views, conflicting beliefs and so on.

Many Americans shout, “Do not negotiate with terrorism.” I could argue that the French would not be “negotiating” so to speak; however, they are being reasonable. The government should put a limit on certain things Charlie Hebdo publishes. Why add so much fuel to an already out of hand fire? Freedom of the press can be expressed in so many other

There are many views surrounding the Charlie Hebdo firebombing from January 7th. Many journalists from sources such as The Guardian, FOX News, and the New York Times say that the shooting of cartoonists in defense of religious beliefs is unethical and immoral. However, these approaches to the issue of freedom of speech presented by the Hebdo cartoons, which portray the Muslim prophet Mohammed in derogatory and lewd sketches, are represented quite differently by Joe Sacco in his comic titled On Satire. In this comic, Sacco demonstrates his opinion on the issue of freedom of speech by showing how offensive the material was that Hebdo had published. This was easily…

The inflammatory video on Islam in question, titled, “Innocence of Muslims,” is a 14-minute long film production that mocks Islam’s prophet, Muhammad. It was uploaded to the video site YouTube in July, 2012, but didn’t gain attention in the Muslim world until its broadcast on an Egyptian Islamist television station until early September. Only days after its broadcast, protests broke out in several cities throughout the Middle East and the rest of the world, including Cairo and some Western countries. Not only were there marches and shouting of anti-U.S. slogans, there was also the burning of U.S. and Israeli flags as well as the burning of some buildings generally associated with the U.S. Islam strictly prohibits any depictions of the prophet Muhammad, unlike in Christianity, where Jesus is often depicted through paintings and sculptures, which Christians tend to worship.…

Early on it becomes apparent that Jabarti is not at all a fan of the French. This belief first appears in his scathing critique of a French proclamation sent to the people of Egypt. He describes the letter as incoherent, vulgar, and miserable. Jabarti then goes after French society itself, describing the people simply as disgusting. He further his attack with the statement, “Their women do not veil themselves and have no modesty.” Jabarti describes the French’s view on religion as despicable. He points out that the French no matter how much they pretended to be religious were an enemy to both Islam and Christianity and insisted that they were just a materialistic…

In The Decline of American Press Freedom by Anne Applebaum, polish journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winner, she wrote about how America’s freedom of press is being censored by corporations and the government. Companies and other governments have been banning certain articles from reaching certain their citizen’s media and other countries. For example, a journalist named Scott Anderson wrote an article called Vladimir Putin’s Dark Rise to Power. The article is about a theory of the Russian government setting off explosions in Moscow in the year 2000 killing their own citizens and blaming it on Chechen Republic terrorists to gain support for a second Chechen war. This article was banned by their government and a publishing company from everywhere…

First, looking at the discrimination of Muslims in the modern world. The population, not only in the United States but in other countries as well, go through extensive measure to “keep the country safe”. All these people are doing is calling out people because of the way they live/their race, what their beliefs are and what they do for a living. We always seem to double check on people who don't quite ‘look American’ or they look as though they are of a different ethnicity from what we believe is safe. Recently, some amount of Muslims have been accused of being a terrorist just because of their appearance. Just like in this first article where a college student who majors in terrorism, crime and global security. He was studying more on his major in a public library, when someone had noticed his appearance and decided that they should question him about his thoughts on…

Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses addresses much more than the infamous controversy within Islam. It is about nationalism, migration, religion, postmodernism, politics, rebirth, hybridization, transformation, compromise, and Islam. However, the great controversy of the Satanic verses, as portrayed in Rushdie's novel, serves as the template from which all the other issues can be examined. Ayatollah Khomeini's fatwa, likewise, can be seen as an expected response that seems to fit the themes addressed in the novel. The typical Western opinion that the Ayatollah's reaction is representative of "backwards" Islam is also an ironic manifestation of the novel's themes.…

In March 2001, the Taliban destroyed the Buddhas of Bamiyan which Finbarr Barry Flood said would define Islamic iconoclasm for many decades to follow. The author argues that the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas does not represent Islam’s attitude towards figuration, but rather a response at a particular moment in time. This point is still true today considering Islam’s view on images has never been the reason for iconoclasm, but what defines iconoclasm has certainly changed in recent years with ISIS’s destruction of artwork. Although Flood does make one good point that can still hold up about iconoclasm today, his article “Between Cult and Culture: Bamiyan, Islamic Iconoclasm, and the Museum” does not contribute to the understanding of ISIS’s destruction of cultural heritage and…

Catholicism and Christianity have been around as long as the Heaven and Earth have been around. They are religions based on the life of Jesus of Nazareth, as written in the Bible so many years ago. They are the religions of the true believers (or Apostles) we must say. All over America you are likely to find a Catholic or a Christian and sometimes maybe even both. The odd thing about the two religions is that you can say that, “a Catholic is a Christian, but you cannot say a Christian is a Catholic.” Because Catholicism is a subset of Christianity, but not all Christians are Catholic some are Protestant, Methodist, Mormon, Evangelical, Orthodox, or Baptist.…

Ever since September 11, Islam have become the face of terror and this has brought a lot of attention and victimization towards average Muslims. Many people are just looking for a reason to bash Islam, so they pick on controversial topics that Muslims differ from. One controversial topic is the hijab and it what it symbolizes, to many non-Muslims conservatives. The hijab and/or burqa is a veil that covers the head and body and is a form of modest attire worn by Muslim women. This form of attire has been linked oppression, voiceless, or religiously conservative by the mass media. Certain media outlets like fox news and other conservative outlets have been the spearhead of these stereotypical views and insults. These brave women choose to use a veil just like any other woman would chooses to wear a bikini at the beach,…
