Characterization Of Grendel In Beowulf

Bored by the isolation of the Wild West, Grendel begins to pick up a drinking habit to kill time. It all started when he went out to hunt for food. He found an old woman living outside the town. After killing and eating her, Grendel found multiple jars with the word “XXX Granny’s Moonshine” written across it. Disgust by the spleen taste of the old woman in his mouth, Grendel decided to drink down the liquid to clean up his taste butt. He was hooked.
On the weary night, a shadowy beast wandered into the town of Hadleyville. Attracted by the light and singing of the town’s tavern, the beast punch opens the door. The pieces of broken door flew across the tavern hitting liquor bottles and people inside. The men, too drunk with moonshine, are only able to make out the beast contour marked with moonlight. “Mooooooan-shiieein” screams the beast.
Cries, curses, and rumors spread among the townspeople. Churchgoers at the scene pray for the death. Many of them were convinced that Grendel appearance shows God’s anger toward immorality of tavern’s men. Others, like the tavern’s men, were angry at the Sheriff inability to protect the town. After many reports of abduction and night raid by unspecified being, this was the first time it happens in the middle of Hadleyville. The town conducts meeting, reflecting and debating on the solution to this monster. Many volunteer to guard at night and the sheriff put up bounty for Grendel’s head. However, in the coming night this was proved to useless. The men were no match for Grendel’s strength.
For another 12 years, this brutality continues in Hadleyville. Despite the fact that much of the townspeople leaves, it gives itself a reputation of as haunted town. Many men, from gunslinger to law enforcement to bounty hunter gather at the town’s tavern to fight off Grendel. Businessmen profit from the town bounty hunter tourism.
