In the book "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, one of the character's Jonny killed a soca. He ends up running away in the end. That was his first mistake. You don't run away/ flee the town if you know you didn't do anything wrong. Self-defense means that there was nothing he could have done to prevent killing Bob (the soca). (Voluntary) Manslaughter, however, refers to intentionally killing the victim without planning it. In the book, Jonny states if a soca were to ever jump him again, then he would be ready to kill them. Even with that evidence, he still hasn't planned the way, when, or how he would kill someone. He also says "yeah. His voice was quivering slightly. I had to. They were drowning you ponyboy. They might have killed you." He…

I genuinely did not expect to learn this much from the book Unbroken. The story of Louie Zamperini was unexpectedly much more understandable and relatable than I first imagined. Seeing the main character was a former war hero, I found it surprising I was able to connect to him as I happen to be fourteen. In my opinion, readers can easily compare similar situations in their life, regardless of their age. A point often overlooked, Louie is a true survivor. He was stranded forty-seven days on a crammed raft, as well as beaten without remorse at a prison camp for two years. Louie was stripped of his friends as he watched them either be transferred or slowly die. He witnessed many accounts of sexual abuse to innocent and helpless animals, as well…

He was a Greaser but has been frightened by the Socs. He has been stereotyped as a juvenile delinquent by and has always been made fun of. Ever since Ponyboy has been brought into this gang life he fails to see the good side in any Soc and is to stick together with the Greasers believing that each one of them lives up to their name as being the jet set rich kids. However, there is one input from a Soc that makes Ponyboy realize that the Socs and Greasers both go through the same struggles, Cherry. She opened up Pony’s eyes to believe that there is only one difference between the Socs and Greasers. “You Greaser have a different set of values. You’re more emotional. We’re more sophisticated--cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us.” (Hinton 33) From this Ponyboy learned that you can’t just judge someone from what people tell you or how you have been taught to know them as growing up. Each and every Soc has their own problems that their going though, just like the Greasers and Pony also believed that maybe their worlds weren't so different because they both watched the same sunset, which was a big part of Pony’s life. Pony had to step into the Soc’s shoes to realize that things are rough all over, no matter a Soc or…

Growing up, there was a fascination about finding the perfect soul mate. To me, love was represented in different times in my life, it went from being a kid, and cartoons saying that one day prince charming will find you. To teen years of "The Breakfast club," saying that you will find love in the same surrounding and it will be distinct and interesting. To an adult and "Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind," telling you that your lives will cross paths and love will be so hurtful, one day you will want to completely erase the memories from your mind. They all play out various situations that can be true to different people, but slowly I believe we all come to a realization that in reality, good relationships are hard to come across by, and even when…

“No rival gangs, only Socs. And you can't win against them no matter how hard you try, because they've got all the breaks and even whipping them isn't going to change that fact.” The Outsiders a novel that was first published in 1967 by the author S.E Hinton is not only a novel about gang mentality and gang rivalry but is also about how a person could feel like ‘an outsider’ based on where they live or how much money they have.
