Characterisation of a mountain river in the NE Borneo, which showed highly variable pattern in between segments were carried out in the present study through the analysis of sinuosity indexes and determine the factors responsible. Analysis of characteristic patterns and behaviour of stream channels are a topic of research interest for quite long time (Leopold and Maddock, 1953; Schumm, 1963; Schumm and Khan, 1972; Schumm et al., 1972; Rosgen, 1994). Numerous researchers have studied different aspects related to stream channels at various levels and scales. Most works are considered as the extension of fluvial geomorphology, which deals with catchment scale analysis of stream characteristics to local, site specific analysis (Robertson-Rintoul and Richards, 1993; Ebisemiju, 1994; Winterbottom, 2000; Rinaldi, 2003; Uribelarrea, 2003; Rachana et al., 2004; Aswathy et al., 2008; Zámolyi, et al., 2010; Kamarudin et al., 2014; Barman, and Goswami, 2015; Clerici et al., 2015; Dhari et al., 2015; Ulloa et al., 2015). River channels show different patterns in its whole stretch of flow which directly correlates to the landform characteristics and varying from straight course typical of mountain streams, meandering in midland stretches and braided in the low land reaches (Leopold and Wolman, 1957). Variability in channel pattern can be attributed to variation in the landform characteristics and flow dynamics. These can be caused due to geological processes operating in the region, which might affect the sediment delivery, discharge and flow pattern by modifying the base level and finally

    The Bradshaw model aims to show how different characteristics of a river change from the source to the mouth in a simplistic method that can easily be understood (greenfield geography, 2012). A geographical model is “an attempt to understand natures is high complexity. Therefore geographers try to develop simplified models of it” (Waugh, D. 2009). The model shows a series of triangles and each one represents a different fluvial characteristic. On the left is the source and on the right is the mouth, for example if the triangle gets wider while moving towards to right it would mean that this characteristic is increasing as the river moves downstream. Alluvial rivers have channels and floodplains that are self-formed in unconsolidated or weakly consolidated sediments. They erode their banks and deposit material on bars and their floodplains.     In this study, we examined the factors that control the spatial distribution of bank gully heads along a reach of an ephemeral river (Arbaminch, Ethiopia) in an area threatened by desertification in Southern Ethiopia. The activity of 58 gully heads was assessed in the field by pre-defined criteria such as sharp edges, presence of a plunge pool, tension cracks, recent deposited sediments, flow marks, and vegetation re-growth. The results showed that land use has a significant impact on bank gully head activity and also on the head. Recent land-use changes involving the extension of cultivation appears to intensify bank gully head activity. Also, lithology has a clear impact on the bank gully extension. It was further investigated whether the gully heads were important sediment sources that contributed to reservoir sedimentation. The density of (very) active bank gully heads along the study reach was one per 17 m of channel length. Average annual retreat volumes were derived from measurements at 46 active gully heads (4.0 m3 y−1). By selecting all the channel sections in the catchment of the Kulfo Reservoir with a similar pattern of bank gullies using aerial photographs, an estimate of basin-wide sediment production of bank gully heads was established. It was estimated that the retreat of active bank gully heads alone in the 12,760 ha study area (representing 12% of the total catchment area of the Kulfo Reservoir) produced 6% of the sediment filling up the reservoir. Considering that the sediment is also derived from other sources such as channel walls, channel beds, and hillslopes, the overall conclusion is that bank gully expansion in Southern Ethiopia is a major point source of sediment and therefore, a major process of land degradation.…

    To determine the aesthetic value of a river, there are several parameters that we need to observe. Firstly, look at the transparency of the river water. Transparency is the measure of the depth of light that can penetrate into the water (What is water transparency?, n.d.). It depends on the amount of particle scattering in the water, such as algae and sediment. The lower the turbidity of the water (the higher the transparency), the higher the aesthetic value of the river. High turbidity of water causes by particulate matter can reduce the aesthetic value of the river because it can impact on recreation and tourism (Agency, 2008). Less number of tourists will come to a place with low aesthetic value, and hence give impact on economic resource in our country. Water transparency is important because it allow sunrays to penetrate deep until the bottom. Hence, photosynthesis can happen as the aquatic plants absorb the sunray and supplies an amount of oxygen for the other aquatic organisms.
