Character Analysis Of John Proctor In The Crucible

John Proctor is the protagonist in The Crucible , by Arthur Miller. He stuck to his guns and didn't give in to the witch conspiracy , he was an honest man, and had strong morals. He was a man with pride. a women with tons of respect once said, "Do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you'll be criticized anyway. " (Eleanor Roosevelt). When the play finally starts up, we are acknowledged John has had an affair with Abigail (his servant). Elizabeth Proctor; John’s wife, is soft hearted and for gave John. John makes sure he does not tell anyone he had an affair in hope he would not ruin his good name, and reputation. The affair John had with Abigail, was the cause of the rumor about witchery and “seeing people with the devil”. Abigail became envious of Elizabeth Proctor.
Even though John knows he should confess, he still determined to not confessing. John is given the opportunity to “confess” himself of being a witch(warlock). The courts want John to sign a paper of what John confesses to, to post on the church doors so citizens can read and think that if an honest man confessed of being a witch, they will feel obligated to confess if they are one too. Of course, John refuses to sign. He knows that a signing his name to a lie, would not only dishonor his name, but it would also destroy his public reputation. John is a very honest man, and by refusing to sign his name to a lie, he feels he will be rewarded in the afterlife. John would rather pass on knowing he stood up for himself, and that he stood up for what he knew to be true, than live a life of a coward who fears death. John also did not give the names of innocent citizens. Proctor knows if he gives the names of citizens who are said to be witches, they will be hanged. So he feels like he has no choice but to do the right thing and die so the witch rumor would end and less people would he hanged . Proctor protects and stands up for his neighbors and friends. "I
