Character Analysis Of Atticus In To Kill A Mockingbird, By Harper Lee

Everybody has a fatherly influence in their life. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird, there are many prominent characters. They each have their own personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. Atticus acts as a father to many of the children in the book and gives them his wisdom and advice. A great amount of people adore Atticus and he has the ability to teach the children in the book, but also has great lessons for the readers. Atticus acted as a protector, father, and did many brave things. Soon after meeting Atticus in the novel, you find out he is very protective of Scout and Jem. It is obvious he loves them dearly, and would give his life for them. He always had their safety as a priority in his mind. For example, when Miss Maudie’s house caught on fire Atticus thought first, about the children. “Not yet, son. Do as I tell you. Run now. Take care of Scout, you hear? Don’t let her out of your sight.” (69) There were many other times all throughout the novel where Atticus stood as a protector in his children’s lives.
He always searched for an opportunity to make something a life lesson. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” Atticus taught his children about real courage, and encouraged them in every aspect of their lives.
