In life we know that every individual is different and the way we chose to handle certain situations in our life is different as well. There are two kinds of people in this world. There are ones who let their challenges and obstacles define who they are and there are others. These are ones who accept challenges handed to them, learn from their mistakes, and find ways to grow. No obstacle in life is too big

Her heart offered kind love and sacrifice, she decided to travel by walking across town to receive medicine for her grandson. Phoenix was faced and had to overcome physical barriers. The physical barriers that challenged her included: the stream she had to cross, the barbed wire fence she climbed through, the briers she had to escape, the maze of a dead corn field she worked through, and the scarecrow she passed. At first thinking it was an actual ghost. In order for Phoenix to complete her journey she was to overcome each of these obstacles. In this time period being an elderly black woman was not a life many would pick for themselves. Phoenix, must overcome abstract forces, following physical barriers. Her competition is herself, speaking in terms of her age and frailty. Although she is very old and nearly blind, her spirit is strong. Phoenix’s body is not as strong and responsive as it once was when she was young. The first event attempting to set Phoenix back was when she was surprised by the hunter's dog. In response she defends herself with her cane, hitting him before she loses her balance and falls into a ditch. At this point in time we are introduced to the antagonist, the hunter. The hunter actions are deceiving. At times the hunter would have you believing her cared

Now you go on home, Granny.” In addition, the man laughed at Phoenix multiple times and even called her an old colored person, yet all those insults did not stop her. She was determined to travel to the city, so she did not let this man stop her. In addition to determination, Phoenix is very loving and caring. This is proven when the nurse talks to Phoenix and told her, “The doctor said as long as you cam to get it, you could have it, but it’s an obstinate case.” This shows the reader, that the reason Phoenix made her journey was to help her grandson who has a throat problem, for she had to come get the medicine because the doctor would not deliver it to her. Feeling sorry for someone, but not agreeing with them. As humans we have all felt this feeling at least once in our lifetime. In the book The Awakening, by “Kate Chopin” Kate Chopin sympathizes with the main character Edna but doesn’t pity her. I agree with Kate, because even though she’s married with Leonce a man that she doesn't love and has children with him, she is still free not attached to him at all. Another reason I agree with Kate is that she doesn’t pity Edna. She spends time and loves Robert rather than loving her own husband.…

During the course of her trek, Phoenix shows great determination in spite of many personal obstacles. Her body is described as “very old and small,” making a journey which would be difficult for most people nearly impossible for Phoenix (314; 1). However, in each situation, she uses ingenuity and purpose to persevere. At one point, when the only way over a creek is across a fallen tree trunk, she simply “mounted the log and shut her eyes” (315; 13). With pure faith, she makes her way across by ignoring the dangers in the world around her. She uses a different technique when she encounters what she thinks is a specter. Instead of closing her eyes, she confronts the situation head on, asking, “… who be you the ghost of?” (316; 24). When Phoenix realizes the apparition is actually a scarecrow, she admits to herself, “My senses is gone. I too old, I the oldest people I even know” (316; 27). Not one to let a little thing like her failing mind and eyesight stop her, she continues, undeterred, after telling the scarecrow to keep on dancing…
