Livesey
From the moment that Dr. Livesey appears in Treasure Island, he is depicted as an arbitrator who is fair, intelligent, fearless, and well-organized. As he becomes involved in the treasure hunt, he also shows consideration and kindness to Jim, thus, becoming one of many surrogate parental figures to Jim in the course of the novel. Dr. Livesey is also a narrator of the novel (although only for a few chapters). These chapters are not nearly as colorful or as emotionally charged as the chapters that are narrated by the younger Jim. His descriptions further his characterizations as a scientist, who is most concerned with curing the sick (he repeatedly mentions the malaria present in the swamps). Dr. Livesy is also extremely concerned with fairness to all, as his concern about the pirates that they had to leave behind demonstrates.

Black Dog
A companion of Billy Bones, his arrival at the Admiral Benbow inn marks the beginning of violence at the inn and the notification to Bones that other pirates know of his whereabouts. Although he and Billy Bones are friendly, their meeting ends in a fight where Billy Bones is injured.

Pew foreshadows another side of Long John Silver, the side that is physically challenged but capable of extreme violence. At the end of part I, Pew is trampled by a horse because his friends abandon him.

Squire Trelawney
Squire Trealwney is the figure in the book who finacially underwrites and initiates the treasure hunt. Although he appears to be on top of things, he often makes mistakes and his hiring of Long John Silver and the mutineers tops the list of misjudgments and miscalculations which lead to the downfall of the journey. He is very naïve and trusting, and, thus, is constantly being duped. His best quality is his ability to shoot straight - throughout the novel, he is given the jobs that require the best shot because of his famous aim.

Captain Smollett
The commander of the Hispanolia is the antithesis of the squire, he is perceptive, smart, and scared of the dangers that lie before the journey, an attitude that proves correct. He demands obedience from those who serve under him and is in conflict with both Jim, who shows a rebellious nature against the authority figure, and the

Stevenson conveys to the audience Hawkins’ character development through his use of the first-person narrative. By Jim Hawkins narrating the tale of the adventure of Skeleton Island the audience gets to see the character growth occurring with Jim and also emphasizes the major themes of novel, heroism, isolated islands, language and treasure. Towards the end of the novel, by Stevenson having Hawkins compare the reality of the trip to the expectations of the quest, Stevenson suggests that the adventure really was not a quest for treasure but character growth for Jim as he experiences his first true act of betrayal. This parallels many of the modern novels about heroism in the sense that “once again the imagined world fails to materialize…

<br>Billy is a handsome, young sailor, new to the ship and eager to impress. Billy becomes very popular with the crew. When seeing Billy accepted by the crew it reminds him of the their dislike for him and he becomes jealous. The Dankster's conversation with Claggart also shows his fear that he will lose the power he held from the fear of others when he says ‘they turn from hating you to loving him, and leave you impotent'. Claggart becomes determined in destroying Billy's reputation. Claggart ‘lives on hurting people' and his evil nature prevails through his attempts to bring down Billy throughout the play such as when he orders Squeak to ‘put that new seaman Budd on report' and when he lies to the captain and falsely accuses Billy of starting a mutiny. Billy is innocent in a sense that he has done no wrong which leads to his blind and naïve view of evil. The Dankster tries to warn Billy that ‘nobody's friend is Jimmy-Legs' and by saying ‘he is down on you' but he does not see Claggart to be a threat of any sort. Billy's innocence and devotion to good do not let him see the evil in Claggart whom is trying to destroy him but eventually conflict resulting in the murder of Claggart from a blow by Billy.…

To begin, Silver and his crew convinced Squire Trelawney to hire him and his pirate crew. The text states, “Standing on the dock, I started talking to another man passing the time. He told me he was a former sailor, but now kept an inn in Bristol. Now that his health was not as good on land, he was looking for a job as a cook on a ship” (61). This is where all the deception starts, because Silver wanted to sail to Treasure Island to find Flint’s lost treasure, but he deceived the squire into thinking he was completely innocent. Because Silver and his pirate crew deceived the squire from the very beginning, deception becomes a key theme in this book. Next, once they are on the island, Silver tries to get the other pirates to think he is on their side but also tries to convince Jim that he is on his side. As Long John Silver told Jim, “You have to understand one thing now, Jim. I’ve switched to the squire’s side” (201). Silver also tried to tell the pirates that he was on their side and with them, but all he wanted was to get the treasure for himself, and he deceived the other people so they could help guide him to the treasure. Finally, Jim’s friends and Ben Gunn had some deception of their own up their sleeves. The book declares that when Silver and his pirates made it to the spot where the treasure was, it…
