CHAPTER 2

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 NATIONAL INVENTORY OF LIMESTONE • National Inventory of Cement Grade Limestone is the basic prerequisite for planning the strategy for the growth of the Cement Industry. The twin objectives of inventory is to update the availability of the limestone and to bring into focus the limiting factors affecting the availability of limestone . • The total resources of limestone of all categories and grades as per UNFC system as on 1.4.2005 are estimated at 1,75,345million tonnes of which 12,715million tonnes 7% are under reserve category and 1,62,630million tonnes are under remaining resources category. • About 76% of the gross reserves are concentrated in just six states namely Andhra Pradesh , Karnataka , Gujarat ,Rajasthan ,Madhya Pradesh , • As on 31 March 2010, the country’s estimated gross reserves of cement grade limestone stand at 97430 mn.t. Out of this, 22476 mn.t (23%) of proved category, 19031mn.t (20%) of probable category and 55923 mn.t (57%) of possible category reserves.

2.4 INFLUENCE OF GDP – GROWTH IN THE PRODUCTION AND TARGETS SET TO THE INDUSTRY.

Limestone is perhaps the most extensively exploited mineral gift of nature and the cement industry is the largest beneficiary of this mineral. Limestone is the basic ore for the cement industry and the cement manufactured as previously mentioned has wide application especially contributing to the infrastructure growth to the nation.

The round circle shows the growth in the cement industry i.e limestone production in july 2011 with an increase 10.6% but there has been an decrease in 3.5% in april –july 2011 comapred to april –july 2010. [pic]

The above graphs depict the impact of cement industry which inturn depend largely on the limestone production shows the steep increase in production from 1950 to 2007. • The current limestone production in India is obtained to be

Limestone is known to contain calcium carbonate as an impurity. A sample of limestone was analysed using back titration. A 1.0g sample of limestone was weighed and made into a 50.0mL solution in a conical ask. An excess of 0.395M hydrochloric acid, exactly 50.0mL, was added and allowed to fully react with the CaCO3 . After this reaction, the remaining HCl was titrated with a standard 0.0489M solution of Sodium Hydroxide. The titre was found to be 22.32mL. (Source: Heinemann…

The cement industry in North America has been struggling through tough times in recent years. It is hard to believe that cement volumes have fallen to their lowest levels since the 1980s. The Portland Cement Association has predicted modest growth in the US cement industry during 2011 – 12, and expects that 2013 will mark a watershed for the industry in terms of a substantive and sustained recovery in volume and company decisions to re-open in the context of harsh EPA NESHAP regulations (Maxwell-Cook 2011).…

According to Ziervogel (2007:83) the layers of sediment from which the limestone is formed is laid down in horizontal layers, or strata. Steady tectonic pressure from underneath causes the limestone strata to fracture. If the uplift is completely even and the limestone pure and free from impurities, the bedrock fractures along regular lines at right angles, creating the familiar ‘limestone pavements’ found in cool latitudes.…

Limestone is a grey organic sedimentary rock made of calcium carbonate. A lime stone pavement is a large flat area of bare limestone from which soil cover has been removed over a long a period of time the acidic rainwater passes through soil it picks up humic acid from the rotting vegetation in the soil and becomes more acidicis. Rainwater picks up carbon dioxide as it passes through the atmosphere. As it passes through soil, the water picks up more carbon dioxide from organic debris. The water and carbon dioxide combine to form a weak carbonic acid. This acid reacts with minerals in the rocks and either dissolves them or turns them into other minerals. Rocks such as chalk and limestone contain calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate reacts with the weak carbonic acid to form calcium bicarbonate which is soluble. It is then removed in solution. Carbonation is extremely effective at weathering limestone landscapes because limestone has lines of weakness in its bedding planes and joints. Carbonation has produced very distinctive landscapes, with distinctive landforms both on and beneath the surface. Limestone landscapes in Ireland include the Burren region of Co. Clare…

In this experiment,we determined the porosity the rock sample that has been given by conducting liquid (brine) saturation method. The rock sample that has been used in this experiment is sandstone and limestone (carbonate). After we conducting the experiment,we found that sandstone has porosity of 4.58% and limestone has porosity of 1.33%.This indicates that sandstone has a bigger percentage of porosity than limestone. This is because sandstone has a well-sorted grains arrangement rather than limestone. This also shows that sandstone is a good reservoir rock rather than limestone.…
