Inner Space Cavern, 20 miles north of Austin, was originally found by the Texas Highway Department in 1963. In order to determine that the ground could support the weight of a highway overpass, they drilled several test holes; repeatedly the drill bit broke through into open cavities. The first human to enter the cave was lowered on a drill bit through an enlarged test hole. Inner Space Cavern is a highly decorated cave with over 4 miles of passage. The man-made entrance is the only access into the cave passages; however, the remains of 5 sinkholes called bone sinks, rich in fossil remains, have been identified. The cave tour only covers about 1/8th of the existing passage in Inner Space Cavern.…

One large cave may be visited on guided tours. The tour takes about 25 minutes, and the cavern is a constant temperature of 59 degrees. Native Americans once used the caves for shelter and storage, and their history is told in the park’s informative museum. The rest of the caves are off limits or even gated to protect fragile formations and colonies of endangered gray bats. These shy insect-eating creatures are easily disturbed, but warmly welcomed by campers for the tons of mosquitoes they eat.…

Now a half a year later, I can say I get to spend as much time there as I want because of two reasons: I have a car and I volunteer there on the weekends. This has given me the chance to explore my town’s history and a lot about my own. Being able to teach people about the small, but wonderful town I live in is one of the greatest parts of the job. Being able to help preserve the history of my town and its people is what I enjoy doing. What I once thought was going to be a meaningless trip became the cause and reason why I appreciate museums and history much…

The owner, who for several decades had been a friendly with cavers, openly allowing access, was ailing and wanted to ensure that her precious cave was protected for future generations even after her passing. Our caving club of course jumped at the opportunity to own such a pristine cave and piece of land, however, it quickly became apparent that finances were an obvious problem. Not wanting to lose the opportunity to aqurried and protect the cave however, purchase activity moved forward, in hopes our parent organization the National Speleological Society would be able to assist in funding. As we moved forward as an organization everyone was overwhelmed by the excitement of soon having unrestricted access to Brooks Cave. However, it quickly became apparent that even with the NSS’s funding the grotto itself would have to raise almost 50,000 dollars over five years. Considering the grotto consists of approximately 30 people, this fact alone should have triggered alarms. Interestingly enough however not a single individual showed public…

Plato commences his story by describing the cave’s structure, the humans that are inside and the ambiance in which it takes place. He is very detailed as he describes his thoughts. You can picture the details as you read. “Behold! humans beings living in an underground den, which has a mouth open towards the light and reaching all along the den; here they have been from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads” (p. 657). Plato describes the cave with words that immediately intrigues the reader’s imagination. Plato speaks about chains and how long the humans have been inside the cave, I only see this as exactly how reads. I envision the humans having a clamp around their neck as it were a neck brace which restrains them from turning around.…

This museum tells about the depressing memories of the holocaust and its genocide. This museum in hopes of showing you these memories with real found items for instance; dolls, diaries, books, clothes, & etc. When seeing these items it is really freighting knowing that most of these items belonged to children especially the diary pages that were found. Speaking of Diaries of children, there was a Anne Frank Exhibit, showcasing everything about this young girl and her family. Everything told there is usually from her diary, because her diary had so much great detail about what was going on in her life. When she first started writing, she was only 13 years old, and thanks to the nazies, Anne and other children never got to experience growing up and have a good life. The holocaust exhibit was the last exhibit we saw in the museum. It showcases what victims went through while the holocaust was first taking place, such as propaganda against jews and offensive comics also to the…

The style of the Museum fits its purpose, which is basically a giant playground filled with attractions that beg you to come interact with them. You can climb on, around, or in almost everything, such as a lifesize Bowhead whale, the man-made ‘enchanted caves’, several 4-foot-wide slinkies, and a ‘skateless park’, which is just like a normal skate park except for it’s made for running, jumping, and climbing, not skateboards. The old school bus I mentioned earlier? It’s mounted half-on and half-off the roof, ten stories up in the air!…
