American Independence Have you ever wondered what led to the American Revolution? At the time there was much tension between Britain and the 13 colonies. For example, parliament had imposed many taxes and passed the Intolerable Acts. The tension also increased as a result of the formation of the Sons Of Liberty. These three events led to what we know as, the American Revolution. The least influential yet, important of the three events was the formation of the Sons Of Liberty. Although it was the least influential of the three events it did increase the tension between Britain and the 13 colonies. It was also caused because of the taxes that parliament imposed. The taxes were an important factor because they made the colonists extremely unhappy at Britain. First of all, parliament was the one that imposed them which made the colonists angry because they thought that they had to allow parliament to tax them. There was another problem; the taxes were imposed on many every-day items that the colonists used. These unfair taxes made colonists angry enough to board many ships and throw tea off of them because they were getting taxed for tea that they did not drink as much as their own tea. The taxes also led colonists to smuggling items because they were getting taxed too much on items that they need. One of the colonists named James Otis stated “No parts of England’s colonies can be taxed without their consent… every part has a right to represented.” That is where the phrase “No taxation without representation,” comes from. That phrase meant that the colonists were being taxed but, the taxes were not helping the colonists. The taxes all started after the French and Indian war in effort to pay off Britain’s debt. First, parliament tried to get new revenue by placing Sugar Act. The Sugar Act enraged the colonists because the colonists believed that it violated their rights.
