Flight attendants accept airline’s offer of a pay rise as pilots begin work-torule action
As Cathay Pacific pilots embarked on a work-to-rule action yesterday, the airline avoided a similar Christmas slowdown by its cabin crew members when their union accepted a pay rise of 4.5 per cent for most employees.
The airline said yesterday that it would offer the 4.5 per cent increase to more than 90 per cent of its cabin crew and ground staff for next year. Senior staff members will get wages of 3.9 per cent to 4.4 per cent more.
There would also be a bonus of one month's pay, Cathay said.
With the compromise, the Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants Union has backed down from its initial demand of an 8 per cent rise.
Cathay had faced the prospect of multiple labour actions during the busy holiday travel season, but has so far been able to stave off large-scale disruptions.
First-half net profit rose to HK$347 million from HK$24 million in the same period last year, but that still fell short of the company's expectations.
"In the first half in particular, we were buffeted by high fuel prices, weak cargo demand and continued pressure on passenger yield," Cathay chief executive Ivan Chu said.
Meanwhile, the Aircrew Officers Association, which represents 2,100 of the airline's 2,900 pilots, ended its first day of a work-to-rule action with little impact on the flights.
In such an action, pilots do the bare minimum required by their contracts. They do not work on their days off, nor show up early.
Pilots said the impact of their action would be felt only after a few days.
Real-time information on the Chek Lap Kok airport website showed that, as of last night,
Cathay flights recorded only limited

This was a dispute conflict between Virgin Airlines and its pilots about the delayed pay in 2011. Although the government intervened this case, pilots in Virgin Atlantic was not able to reach agreement with the airline on an overdue pay and conditions settlement. In fact, the increasing pay did not found since 2008. The representatives demonstrated that it would ballot Virgin Atlantic members on possible strike action. The company promised to pilots that there was an increase this year of 4 percent, with 3 percent next year and the same percent in 2013. However, Virgin Airlines did not fulfill its promise at all. The pilots also indicated that the inflation was growing up with 5 percent each year, the 3 percent increase is not enough to make a living. The company need to maintain its reputation, and reassure passengers about their flight schedule.…

“Our concerted efforts to introduce permanent structural change across the airline has led to a reduction in non-fuel costs and a return to profitability. Revenue has increased, driven primarily by yield improvements and, while fuel costs have risen, they are in line with our expectations. Our focus on permanent structural change will continue. This summer we agreed a new productivity deal with our Heathrow terminal-based staff that will provide a more flexible, cost-efficient and customer focused ground operation. In addition, the first of the cabin crew recruited on new terms and conditions have completed training and start flying on Monday.…

We upgrade MAHB from Neutral to Outperform as the stock has underperformed by 13% over the past year and could be catalysed by the completion of KLIA2 and Malindo’s surprise entry. The latter leads to a higher DCF, against which we factor in a new 10% discount to derive our end-2013 target price until KLIA2 completion risks pass. Our FY12-13 EPS are cut for higher staff costs. 3.9% to 5.3% to account for Malindo's entry into Malaysia. We are only assuming that Malindo expands to 70 aircraft over 10 years on the basis of rational behaviour, allowing KLIA2 to hit 70% utilisation by 2017 and 95% utilisation by 2022. The strong passenger traffic flow will improve the commercial attractiveness of KLIA2, with possibility of further rental hikes. Should Malindo expand to 100 planes in a decade, as per the official business plan, there would be potential upside to our current traffic forecasts.…
