Catcher In The Rye Banned Essay
A banned/challenged book is material that has been removed because people believe that it is too inappropriate to read. Especially in schools. The reason books are challenged or even banned is that the topics the book covers are sensitive for people to handle. Such as racial themes, profanity, and violence. The novel The Catcher in the Rye would be challenged because it showed a child going through an adult life with vulgar language, sexual references, and underage drinking. After all the reasons why the novel got challenged I still believe that is should not be.
There have been so many books that have been challenged or banned for the reason that the books are dishonorable to read. Shakespeare and Mark Twain are some of many writers that

Some game.” (Salinger) This is where Holden is starting to curse often. The scene takes place when Holden is commenting on the “game life” saying that it is a game for the privileged because it reminds him of his upbringing. Another quote from the novel is “It was a funny thing to say. It sounded like a real kid. You’d think a prostitute and all would say “Like hell, you are” or “Cut the crap” instead of “Like fun you are.: (Salinger) During this scene, Holden recognizes the lingering innocence in Sunny’s voice, even though she is a prostitute.
For me personally, books should not be banned because it is basically censoring someone else's art. Writers or authors have the right to publish whatever they want. They are just books. People should not get all worked up over a piece of literature. Especially schools. Schools across the country in different time periods banned the novel for the reasons being that it is too vulgar, sexual, and violent for kids to read. (“Banned Book: The Catcher in the Rye”)
In conclusion, The Catcher in the Rye or even any book should be banned because of the content. That is what makes it art and unique. After all the reasons why the novel got challenged I still believe that is should not be. After all the reasons why the novel got challenged I still believe that is should not

Holden’s *friends are familiar and experienced with the topic of sex while Holden stays puzzled and curious. Holden comes on strongly with just about every woman he meets for example Sally Hayes, Sunny, and Jane Gallagher. Sally Hayes is a longtime friend of Holden’s and grew up together. Holden is extremely attracted to Sally and even dreams of running off to a cabin with her having children and living happily ever after. Holden says that he “felt like marrying her the minute I saw her” (138). Sunny is a prostitute that Holden paid just to talk to even after she started removing her clothes. When he met her pimp he knew what he was paying for, however never went through with it. Jane Gallagher is an old friend that Holden used to spend summers with and she is very important to him. He comes on strong to women at the bar and close friends but never actually does it. Holden is confused about sexuality, especially when it is homosexual. Holden strongly dislikes when a guy “flirts” a lot and is simply puzzled by the whole topic of sex. Sex is simply a confusing idea for any young teen, but for Holden it is a little harder. In the novel it implies that as a child he was sexual abused by his neighbors dad and was neglected by his own parents. He is also timid when it comes to being imamate with a women after his brother, Allie, lost his life to cancer. Phoebe is…

The challenged book I recently read was Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This book has been challenged, and almost banned, for quite a while. I personally disagree with the statement that this book should be banned. This book has a very deep and meaningful background, and the good definitely outdoes the bad.…

All Information i have gotten about this book being banned all support the idea of this book being banned for a main character smoking and some different outlook on religion. Personally i think this is a horrible and no good reason to ban a book from schools where children can sit down and enjoy a book meant to show them an adventure. My personal opinion is that the only time a book should be taken away from people is if the…

It is inappropriate for teenagers to have anything to do with a prostitute, Holden, having paid for Sunny, is not deemed acceptable. Another controversial scene is when Holden lies to the mother of one of his old classmates. It is a boy he detests; however, he speaks highly of him to his mother. He also attempts to erase every, “f*** you,” he sees to protect the innocence of children. He is attempting the impossible because all children will eventually have to grow up. Each of these scenes adds to Salinger’s overall theme of the novel, the loss of…

Did you ever think that books that contain sex, obscene language, and immoral subjects could make a good book? The Catcher in the Rye is a prime example. The book has been on the banned reading list since the days following its publishing. The book was said to be “immoral and inappropriate that in 1960, a teacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was fired for assigning the book to an eleventh-grade English class.” (“Banned Book: The Catcher”) The Catcher in the Rye should be read in schools because it gives a crystal clear image on how the world contains sex, violence, and motifs of lying and deception.…

These books are: Harry Potter by J.K Rowling, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Killing Mr.Griffen by Lois Duncan, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, When Dad Killed Mom by Julius Lester, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, The Joy of Gay Sex by Dr. Charles Silverstein, Goosebumps by R.L Stine. The books Harry Potter by J.K Rowling and Goosebumps by R.L Stine both are very graphic and descriptive in their writing and they both are absurd non-fiction that go against all religions. Killing Mr.Griffen by Lois Duncan, When Dad Killed Mom by Julius Lester, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson all talk about tragic death to innocent people. Of mice and men is a very unique book that has all the elements to get banned such as betrayal, abuse, killing, rape, mental illness. All these elements are really hardcore when put together and have put tears into people’s eyes (including mine), and people didn’t like that and decided to ban the…

This book was banned due to racial tensions and so called “inappropriate content”. In 1960, school administrators fired an Ohio teacher for assigning the novel to an 11th grade student. The administration claimed the book was anti-white and more predominant white communities fought to have it banned completely. A library banned the novel for a so called violation of codes. The library claimed it had excessive sex scenes, violence ,and extreme foul…

Words like “goddam”. (Salinger 34), “moron”(44), and “crap”(35) are the words that Holden uses constantly throughout the book when he talks to his peers, and friends that he tries to connect with. This type of language that J.D.Salinger uses puts a negative image on the book, and many parents disagree with the idea of kids reading, and learning a book that has profanity in it. Not only did parent not like J.D.Salinger use of the profanity, but parents also did not like that the author used sexual feelings, and thoughts in the book that kids read and learned. In the book the author shows the sexual thoughts of Holden a teenager “You'd think a prostitute and all would say “Like hell you are” or “Cut the crap” instead of “Like fun you are.”(123) Parents all around America complain about The Catcher in the Rye, and how the author uses sexual thoughts, and phrases with profanity in a book that is taught at school. This was just the beginning of the many bad reviews that The Catcher in the Rye got. One of the other major complaint that was submitted was the use of profanity in certain scenes. One scene that seemed very offensive and slanderous was when Holden was cursing in front of his little sister “ like as if Thurmer was a goddam prince or something.” “Don't swear so much”(218) Many parents, and authors found this offensive because it gave the impression that kids, and…

Not all books that are banned should be but there are some that I see good reasoning for why it has been banned. In my opinion the book I read shouldn’t be banned, but I do see why some readers feel that it should, in the book there is some violence that might be disturbing to a young reader. Also to some young readers they may find the book to be scary. Even with these other points I am still against banning this book and many other books. I encourage anyone who dislikes a book or finds it inappropriate to think about their decision before challenging or banning a…

With the research I’ve done about the book being banned, my opinion still remains that it’s not right to keep it away from children. I think schools should be allowed to provide the book to students, but I don’t think they should make them read it. If the child wants to read the book and their parents approve, it should be allowed in school libraries. If the book is offencive to you, don’t read it. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean nobody should be able to enjoy…

The Catcher in the Rye. The Scarlet Letter. Huckleberry Finn. Harry Potter. The Diary of Anne Frank. Animal Farm. To Kill a Mockingbird. The Da Vinci Code. The Grapes of Wrath. These literary classics have been vital to the education of many, especially children and adolescents (Banned Books). These great novels both teach important values and educate children about world affairs and classic themes. Unfortunately, each of these novels has been banned at one point in time. In a country where freedom is so adamantly advocated, it is a wonder that an issue like censorship would even come up, that such a controversy would sink its claws into the minds of states’ boards of education across the nation. Censorship is a needless restriction placed on developing minds that need the morals and values that banned books can give.…
