Cask of Amontillado is seeping with sarcasm and irony, which makes the short story even more chilling. Montresor continually mocks Fortunato. When the two arrive in the catacombs Montresor basically foreshadows Fortunatos’s impending murder, which makes him seem even more cold-blooded. For example, Montresor’s motto and coat of arms clearly reflected his plans for Fortunato’s future, but the intoxicated Fortunato was oblivious to his forthcoming demise.
