Case Study: Ma Earth Skin Care
In this case study, Heather finds herself in a very difficult situation. The ethical dilemma she is faced with is between her own personal convictions and the situation that her organization has positioned her in. Heather had preconceived notions about the company she worked for in respect to the virtuous deeds it was doing for the tribe and the environment and was misled concerning the preservation of an endangered ecology. Realizing that these beliefs were not fully truthful placed Heather in a challenging predicament. The unethical territory in which Heather finds herself in is centered on the false claims and advertisements that Ma Earth Skin Care is promoting. Despite not obtaining the orellana from the tribe, the company continued in their financial support of the community. The organization is benefiting the community in terms of providing schools, clinics, food, etc. with the financial assistance that it is providing. However, they should be honest to consumers and admit that the tribal people and the community are the image for the product and not where the orellana is harvested and grown.
Ma Earth Skin Care would likely receive a lot of public recognition from the campaign by being honest and promoting that they are providing financial assistance to the tribe for being the “face” of the product. Consumers love a good story with a happy ending. The company could ethically utilize the tribe and the Amazon rain forest to their marketing advantage, while also providing an advantage to the locals themselves. If the managers and the line level personnel understand what is expected of them, then they will be more cognizant of performing up to those ethical standards. A well-written mission statement, vision statement, and code of ethics are paramount in a business. Employees that fail to live up to the standards mandated by the organization should be disciplined.
