A Case of Water Diabetes

#5-11

5. Diabetes Mellitus differs from Diabetes Insipidus because Diabetes Mellitus results from the

body not being able to produce insulin while Diabetes Insipidis is a condition in which the

kidneys are unable to conserve water. Diabetes Insipidus and Diabetes Mellitus are unrelated,

although they can have similar signs and symptoms, like excessive thirst, both non-curable, and

excessive urination. Differences between the two are:

6. Diabetes Insipidus refers to the abnormal state of water diuresis, and Diabetes Mellitus refers

to the abnormal state of osmotic diuresis. Diabetes Insipidus causes diuresis due to hormonal

Excessive thirst, excess volume of severely

diluted urine.

High blood sugar, excessive urination,

increased thirst, increased hunger.

imbalances while Diabetes Mellitus causes diuresis due to high blood sugar leaking into the urine

and taking excess water along with it.

7. They both have an inappropriate secretion of the antidiuretic hormone. Diabetes insipidus

doesn't produce enough ADH or respond to it, thus produces too much urine. SIADH is the

opposite and retains too much water, rather than excreting it excessively in DI.

8. Polyuria-sickle cell diseases, pyelonephritis. Polydipsia-Diabetes Insipidus and other

conditions that create water deficit. Other commons causes are:

9. DDVAP is a synthetic analogue of the natural pituitary hormone 8-arginine vasopressin

(ADH), an antidiuretic hormone affecting renal water conservation. It is indicated for patients

with hemophilia A with factor

Antidiuretic hormones regulate water reabsorption by making the upper part of the distal tubule and the collecting duct more permeable to water. If the ADH producing cells in the hypothalamus or the nerve cells that bring ADH to the pituitary gland were destroyed, it would cause this condition to occur. Someone with diabetes insipidus would have an increased urine output and would be constantly thirsty due to the fact that they cannot reabsorb much of the water they consume. Their urine would be very diluted and very light in colour. After comparing the colours of the different urine samples, it was concluded that Sample Y could have diabetes insipidus due to its light colour. The light colour could be a result of the inability to reabsorb water in the nephron which could be linked to diabetes…

If left untreated, over time, high blood glucose levels damages the kidneys’ filtering system and causing kidney failure requiring dialysis or kidney transplant. The main complication is cardiovascular problems, including coronary artery disease with angina, heart attack, stroke, narrowing of arteries (atherosclerosis) and high blood pressure. According to the American Heart Association the risk of stroke is two to four times higher for people with diabetes, and the death rate from heart disease is two to four times higher for people with diabetes than for people without the disease. Other complications if left untreated are chronic renal disease, osteoporosis, eye damage and hearing…

Ketones are by products of fat breakdown. Normally, the kidneys try to make up for high glucose levels in the blood by allowing the extra glucose to leave the body in the urine. If you do not drink enough fluids, or you drink fluids that contain sugar, the kidneys can no longer get rid of the extra glucose. Glucose levels in the blood can become very high as a result. The blood then becomes much more concentrated than normal…

These include frequent urination (polyuria), excessive thirst (polydipsia), and excessive hunger (polyphagia). Other signs include excess glucose in the blood due to the body not being able to process all the extra glucose that is being left from the inability to use the insulin properly. This high sugar level can cause fatigue, blurred vision, abdominal pain, and headaches. It also causes the body to need more water to return the body to homeostasis. Fatigue and frequent urination are symptoms that may send a person to seek medical care (Williams, L. S., & Hopper, P. D., 2015). A patient may seek medical care if they have sores on their feet that become infected due to not healing as this may be a sign of diabetes mellitus (Scobie, I. N., Campbell, I. W., & Samaras, K.,…

Endogenous causes of Cushing syndrome are ACTH-dependent, including Cushing diseases, ectopic ACTH-producing tumors (National Institutes of Health). Pathophysiology causes of diabetes insipidus are abnormality in the functioning or levels of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also known as vasopressin manufactured in the hypothalamic us and stored in the pituitary gland, ADH helps to regulate the amount of fluid in the body (News Medical). For people who experiencing central diabetes insipidus, the production of ADH is too low to stop the kidneys from passing dilute urine. This result in an increased loss of water and the person become more thirst (News Medical). For people who experiencing nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, however, have adequate amounts of ADH in the body but the kidneys fail to respond and again the urine is still not concentrated (News Medical). Stroke or sudden loss of oxygen to the brain is one of the causes of central diabetes insipidus (News Medical). Diseases such as amyloidosis, obstructive uropathy, chronic kidney disease and polycystic kidney disease are one of the causes of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Wow it’s very shocking, that minor disorder causes more sever…

It occurs when the body consistently produces dangerously high blood sugar levels. As a result, the body attempts to flush out the excess blood sugar through increased urination. If it is not treated, it can become life threatening or even fatal.…
