Candide's Journey
When Candide is kicked out of the castle he lived in, he wanders around and is starving and out of money, he sat outside the door of an inn ready to give up. Two soldiers went up to Candide asking if he wanted to eat with them and said they would pay for his dinner. Candide agreed and after they sat at the table the soldiers asked if he loved the King of the Bulgarians. Candide responded and said he didn’t like him because he had never seen him. The soldiers were surprised by his answer and said that he was the best king, and said Candide should drink to his health. Candide started drinking with the soldiers to a king he didn’t even know, which shows that he doesn’t have much independence. The soldiers put him in chains and forced him over

    During the 19th century Frances Ellen Watkins harper was an African American writer, lecturer, and political activist who promoted women rights, temperance, and civil rights. She was one of the best American Literature writers during her time. For her to be African American showed that she wanted to be successful because back then African Americans didn’t know how to read or write. During Harpers Career, Maryland made a law prohibiting any free blacks from entering or returning to the state. If she was caught in her home of Maryland, she would be imprisoned or enslaved. (Campbell 161). That law didn’t stop Harper from being successful, she strived to get her writing career started and continued to achieve the goals that she had planned. Being in organizations and helping others, harper changed lives for many African Americans and also gave them hope.     Spenser’s, The Faerie Queene, was written during the Renaissance, at a time of great change in Europe. Spenser’s literature established himself as a revolutionary writer with influential ideas. Like many people during this time, Spenser began questioning his surroundings. Nonetheless, a new concept of education arose which focused on ancient Greek and Roman texts and the understanding the concept of humanism, as opposed to previous mode of general education in Europe, which was the study of spirituality and religion. Spenser observed corruption within the Roman Catholic church, and with his use of literature and allegory, he was able to express these ideas and reactions to society. It is necessary to analyze Spenser’s work carefully because he uses fiction to represent different ideas and spiritual factors. Popular for the time period, Spenser writes a “courtesy book,” which means that the book’s purpose is to instruct people into becoming better individuals. He expresses this idea in his introduction where he writes, “The generall end therefore of all the booke is to fashion a gentleman or noble person in vertuous and gentle discipline” (716). In Spenser’s, “A letter to the Authors,” he tells the reader that the narrative in The Faerie Queene is full of continuous allegory and that the reader must be aware of this to understand the book’s meaning.
