California Drought
Two years ago, when I was in high school, our social science teacher told us there had a serious drought in Southern California. Most of us did not know anything about it and we felt so surprised about this new. Today, when I heard this new again, I can’t believe that the drought still exist in Southern California, I thought it already solved by the government because it had been two years when I heard this new. From most of my research, it said that it had been fourth year for California to have the drought. Water supply is no longer enough in California, our government was trying to think a best useful way to solve this problem. Some people think that desalination is a good solution because it cost less money and can also recycle the energy. …show more content…
He claimed that building storm sewer system is the best way to deal with Southern California drought. Storm sewer not only can solve flooding problem but also create a new resource of water for people who lived around the drought. In his article “How to Fix California’s Drought Problem”, he also contradicted the desalination required unthinkable amount of energy, but if we use storm sewer system it may not require too much energy as desalination. As I did some research, I found that desalination required “relatively high energy consumption”, and once it required large amounts of energy, the cost will be expensive. Comparing to both solutions, I preferred to use sewer system because building the sewer system has two functions, one is helping government solve the flooding, and the other is creating a new source of fresh water for …show more content…
The government seemed did some preparation for it, so in some extent, the government did a great job by maintaining the balance of economy and water supply. What government need to do next is keeping maintaining the current situation and finding a best solution to deal with drought. Using water from Colorado river and other rivers is not the lasting solution, we can’t unlimited use the seawater as our water supply in a long time, we need to figure out a solution to solve this problem, not just rely the resources what we have

Even though the Long Beach desalinization facility was not a success, it broke ground for a more efficient and productive plant in Carlsbad, California. For four years this drought has been destroying the state of California through wildfires and water shortages. Though many methods have been attempted to aid this state in its crisis, the drought is persistent. However, with advances in technology along with the new desalinization facility, the water consumption cut backs, landscaping changes, and new laws, California may have just what it needs to beat the drought and recover. California has taken an economic blow from this drought, and only time will tell whether or not desalinization will be California's…

The population has increased tremendously since the 1930s and that imposes new threats if a major drought were to happen again. One way to prepare for something like this is to follow a ten-step guide produced by The National Drought Mitigation Center. A disaster of this magnitude is hard to prepare for. However, at this, time thirty eight states have some sort of drought plan in place to ensure this natural or man-made disaster doesn't happen again.…

With these solutions, water can be conserved efficiently because for the first method, it’s easy enough to do as an individual. Also for the second method which were about “shade balls”, it will make a great difference in saving water because if it didn’t exist, then the droughts would’ve gotten worse making it harder to live in those conditions. And finally for desalination, it is a great method for giving access to clean water. These methods have shown that if used, then the water that is left in our world may actually be saved if we took it to our…

The U.S. government quickly started the Drought Program and set it into effect in order to help those who had been through the horrible disaster. It included four separate points: “Providing emergency supplies, cash, livestock feed and transport to maintain the basic functioning of livelihoods and farms/ ranches. Establishing health care facilities and supplies to meet emergency medical needs. Establishing government-based markets for farm goods, higher tariffs, and loan funds for farm market maintenance and business rehabilitation, and providing the supplies, technology, and technical advice necessary to research, implement, and promote proper land management strategies” [National Drought Mitigation…

To this day, California has been in a drought. The governor, Jerry Brown is struggling to create policies to prevent people from using large amounts of water. He has made proposals to reduce the water use in California by building tunnels under the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to increase the supply of water. One of the reasons California is in a drought is because of our history of dealing with the gold miners using hydraulic mining to mine gold, and damming the Tuolumne River to provide water for San Francisco. Although the use of of water has benefitted farmers and cities, it has not been in the best interest of the state because it has harmed the Native Americans and the environment.…

Currently, the water in California is being distributed by a series of tunnels running from the north to the south. These tunnels include the Central Valley Project (CVP), a Federal Government managed project, and California’s own State Water Project (SWP). The two make up “vast interconnected hydraulic machines that push melted snow from dams in the Sierras, through the Delta, to massive pumps that fill the aqueducts traversing the state,” to become what is essentially the southern region of the Central Valley’s lifeline in obtaining and delivering water (Madrigal). California’s battle with drought is not new. The problem dissipates, only to reemerge every few years, narrowing the options for State, Federal, and Local Government agencies…

    Fracking Water Shortage

Aquifers are being depleted at an increasing rate and our water tables are sinking. We must reduce our water usage, while still maintaining our human needs. Fracking must be stopped, not only does it pollute people's drinking water, it also depletes our aquifers. When fracking occurs water is forced way below our water tables, never to be accessed again. IN this age we cannot afford to waste water in that way. Countries living in desert-like conditions should not expand their agriculture. Expanding to the desert will allow for a short time for those countries to be less depend upon others for food sources. However, the aquifers will be depleted and there will be a lack of food left. Countries in areas with water shortages will have to find ways to either farm with minimum water or seek outside assistance. We need to invest in more reach in desalinization. At the moment desalinization is a very expensive option that water companies are beginning to invest in. Governments in countries with few water resources should invest in these practices, even if it is expensive. Running out of water should not be an option. They should invest in more rainwater collection. We need to readdress how we look at the water. It is not necessarily a never ending cycle of harmony, we must invest in…

Southern California imports about 85% of its water, most of it coming from the Colorado River. Because we import so much water, we are becoming too dependant on outside water sources, which needs to change if we ever want the drought to end. California has started pumping more groundwater in response to this threat, but over-pumping groundwater is not the solution either. In order to eliminate the importing of water, we need to turn to desalination, recycled water, and rainwater harvesting.…

Conservation can make more of a difference in the future. If water conservation plans are enacted in the first place the drought would make less of an impact on our population. Fines would be imposed to someone who has used more than the amount of water rationed to them. The revenue of this fine would be used to fund water conservation and drought expense. Also, another aide to conservation that would help before and during a drought is improved appliances that are water efficient. Improved appliances make conservation less burdensome. Consumers do not have to proactively engage in using less; it is done for them.…
