Case Study: Ford Pinto
Abstract
In 1971, Ford Motor Company (FMC), on the advice of then vice-president Lee Iacocca, introduced the first subcompact vehicle, the Ford Pinto. After production had begun and the release of the Pinto in the United States, Ford discovered a defect in the design on the fuel system; the gas tank was placed in the rear of the vehicle. This error could cause the vehicle to explode on low speed rear end collisions due to a bolt puncturing the fuel tank. Ford conducted a risk/analysis to determine whether to recall the vehicles or leave the situation as is and suffer the consequences as they arise. After concluding that the vehicles could be modified for $11 per vehicle, Ford decided not to recall the vehicles. Based on their risk/analysis the cost to recall the vehicles sold would be $137 million, Ford determined that it would be more profitable to leave the vehicles as is and pay out costs in lawsuits because this figure adjusted to $49.5 million, substantially lower than the cost to recall the product. Ethics and morals would prove to be ignored for profit and gain.

In 1978, three female teenagers died in automobile accident, the cause of this fatal accident was a rupture of the gas tank. As a result, the Ford Company was fined $30,000 for each conviction and millions of dollars in punitive damages to the families of the lost teens. The national Highway traffic safety administration broke down the average cost of an accident. The purpose was to make changes in the fatal accident involving three teenage females. The result of this cost consist of the following: Loses of productivity, medical, property, insurance, legal, and loss of employment, pain a suffering, funeral arrangements,

    Ford discontinued the Pinto in 1980 after a costly recall, but the blow to trust would prove more lasting. Consumer activists would now act as safety watchdogs. Competitive advantage is not to just present a product for consumers to purchase, but to gain trust and establish a relationship where they will continue to be loyal. Ford Motor Company was not mindful of this, and when a California jury awarded a Pinto victim a then unheard-of $125 million (later reduced to $3.5 million) for pain and suffering, it roused class-action lawyers everywhere (Bonamici, K, 2005). The results could and should have been different. Ford’s President, Lee Iacocca displayed a lack of mindfulness which inadvertently lapsed his judgment. Gaining a competitive advantage by producing a vehicle under the recommended production guidelines was undisciplined and negligent. In 1966, the National Academy of Sciences published "Accidental Death and Disability - The Neglected Disease of Modern Society," treated automobile accidents as an epidemic, and provided further scientific data supporting the risks associated with driving. The report explained that in 1965, automobile accidents and other accidental injuries killed 107,000 people, temporarily disabled over 10 million, and permanently impaired 400,000 American citizens at a cost of approximately $ 18 billion (Ezroj, 2014).     The Ford Motor Company has been the leading car company for many decades. In the late 1960’s early 1970’s the company was losing the battle with Japanese with the small efficient cars. Lee Iacocca, Chief Executive Officer the Ford Motor Company wanted a car that will be competitive to these Japanese compact cars. With this intention in mind, the company wanted to manufacture a sub-compact vehicle that weighs less than 2,000 pounds and costs under $2,000. The result is the Ford Pinto. The Ford Pinto was one of the earlier sub-compact cars of the 1970’s. The Pinto was a catalyst in the revitalization of domestic compact cars at this time when Japanese imports were front rumors. Sure the car was simply affordable but had one flaw that would tarnish its reputation and the company’s. The Ford Pinto had fire hazard issues resulting from the placement and construction of the gas tank. When a Pinto is rear-ended the car would burst into flames resulting in an explosion. The company realized this concern during production.     External social pressures play a big part in the decision reached about the Ford Motor Company. When you have highly respected individuals such as retired NASA engineer Dr. Leslie Ball say “The release to production of the Pinto was the most reprehensible decision in the history of American Engineering” (Newton, Ford, 2007, p. 1); there is cause for concern. There would be more social pressure today as opposed to the 70’s simply because of the availability of internet.     ANS: The Pinto case raise the moral issues of what is the dollar value of the human life. That the businesses should not be putting a value on human life and disregard a known deadly danger. In order to perform a risk/benefit analysis, all costs and benefits must be expressed in some common measure. This measure is typically in dollars, as the Ford Motor Company used in its analysis. This can prove difficult for things that are not commonly bought and sold on the open market. Therefore, totell someone that there is a certain price for their life is a preposterous notion. There are numerous things which individuals consider priceless. Ford thought they could get away with a dangerous automobile by paying off those lawsuits from people who were injured and the families of the dead. Ford thought it was more cost effective not to fix the dangerous condition than to spend the money to save people. In the criticism of using a number, Ford seemed to blindly follow the dictated numbers without giving any extra consideration to the fact that it in face was a human life they were quantifying. It is hard to achieve values without norms and we have ineffective norms without values. Norms are rules that prescribe what concrete actions are required, permitted or forbidden. These are rules and agreement about how people are supposed to treat each other. Everyone has the right to have a safe and healthy workplace or have the right to expect product they purchase to be safe. Lesson learned is that they shouldn’t be ignoring an obviously dangerous condition and shouldn’t be putting a value on human life.…
