This is an example of an exercise that always seems to go down well with my learners, I divide my learners into pairs, issue them with pens, paper, a catalogue from a tool supplier, i.e. screw fix and set them a task to order and purchase a set of basic tools that would enable them to carry out a decorating project from start to finish. I set them a budget and they have to stay within the budget. This exercise encourages numerous functional skills to be developed. Communication , literacy , problem solving, thinking literacy, maths , using a calculator( IT skills are almost impossible for me to include because of the restrictions exposed on the learners by the prison regime).…

Modernism is associated with an observance to structural innovation, logical use of new materials, methodical approach to the function of buildings and the rejection of ornamentation. The Inland Steel Building clearly demonstrated how American architecture had changed during those decades and attested to the influence of both the international style and the work of Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe and their basic principals of design. The Inland Steel Building was the first high-rise in the Chicago Loop after the construction hiatus created by The Great Depression and World War II. The elegant combination of steel and glass were innovative due to the mass amount of brick and stone structures currently in Chicago. This building created an idea that…

In order to understand how the World Trade Center collapsed we need to understand their structure. To save money and maximize floor space the two towers were built with a tube structure instead of the more common lattice structure. The tube structure was economically favorable because the structure required half the amount of steel compared to the lattice structure and created more floor space (one acre for every floor) without compromising the strength of the structure. This design also makes the building more resistant to strong winds. This was particularly important in New York City where winds created more lateral load on the building than seismic activity. The World Trade Center was built to sustain thirteen thousand tons of wind. The…

Building codes and safety purpose. Building codes act an important role in construction and design phase. In the past, most building codes and standards have used prescriptive (or compliance) criteria. In recent years, there has been strong interest worldwide in developing codes and standards that are more performance based ( Foliente, 2000). The purpose of building codes are to increase safety in the design of the project and its construction. For example, according to the 2010 California Building Code, the multiple purpose is clearly stated that "to establish the minimum requirements to safeguard the public health, safety and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, access to persons with disabilities, sanitation, adequate lighting and ventilation and energy conservation; safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment; and to provide safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency operations." (CBC, 2010). Building codes are created by the local governments, state and federal. The federal government is the least active participant, mandating design standards on such matters as the Americans with Disabilities Act. Actually, under the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Construction, building codes are a problem of state concern, and there is no national building code. Every cities and…

I surprisingly learned a lot from other peoples’ presentation, especially from those people who did construction. My father does projects around the house, but I was too young to remember. He put an addition on our house with a full basement underneath, but it’s been done for years. Watching the people in my class do their own construction projects was really cool. For example, Brennan Files. He had a shed in his back yard that he decided…

Construction contracts structure the way in which construction is purchased. There are variety between construction purchasing system and buying something in a store for instance mobile phone or sofa. When we have the finished product available for our inspection, we can decide whether it meets our requirements. Since the final product is available, we can purchase it from a single store. With the construction it works different. The facility is purchased before it is „manufactured” based on set of drawings and work descriptors. Finally item requires the purchaser to coordinate many entities to include:…
