Greek mythology and The Bible seem to have very different stories and content. The bible is about being a good person and following the ten commandments, while Greek mythology is filled with unfaithful spouses and unjust gods. However there are a few similar stories that might come from common backgrounds. The legends have corresponding parts, which makes them almost identical. Three examples are the first women, the great flood and Hercules and Samson.…
Since the arrival of Christian missionaries in the East in the 13th century, followed by the arrival of Buddhism in Western Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, similarities were perceived between the practices of Buddhism and Christianity.[1][2] During the 20th century the differences between these two belief systems were also highlighted.[3]…
Each religion found a way to explain the origins of both the world and themselves. Many myths seem share different origins and reasons why nature and other parts of the world came into being. Such myths also have a “creator,” and a “void.” Aside from that, some myths in similar areas of the world share a concept of hieros gamos and utilize it within the creation stories. Finally, some of the creation stories share similarities beyond their creators and abysses at the beginning of time.…
According to Barthes (2015), a myth is identified as a classification of stories in narrative form that seek to explain the foundation of values and beliefs adopted by different cultures. Myths often present such stories in an imaginative format as they are based on the supernatural aspect as an attempt to explain natural phenomena and humanity. Therefore, a statement like ‘it’s a myth’ may imply that the subject in question is founded on unjustifiable basis and often adopting an imaginary angle to the story, as an attempt to explain the phenomenon in question.…
As we were told when we were young children, too much of a good thing is not a good thing. The same phrase can apply to aspects in lives now. Literature shows how pride can be a good thing, but too much of it is not. In fact, the opposite of pride, humility, is an extremely important value. The Bible and Edith Hamilton’s Mythology both show how a lack of the value humility will result in consequence through characterization and plot.…
* The Greeks did not think the gods spent all their time creating disasters, though.…
Albert Einstein once said, “Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: it transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural & spiritual, and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a meaningful unity.” I though this quote was an interesting beginning into seeing how this ancient religion changed over the course of its existence. I feel that Buddhism has changed over time but has maintained that core teaching that it had with the early Indians and with the Theravada teachings. Mahayana just happens to be the more loose teachings of the Buddha. The term used in our book, The Foundations of Buddhism, defines it as the “non-canonical” sutras. This paper will hopefully give you an understanding of the teachings of the Buddha as well as see how the Theravada and the Mahayana teachings have similarities along with some differences.…
A myth is a story that is told by people from an earlier time period. They explain what they think to be happening or how they view the world at that point in time. Many of them focus on gods, goddesses, or a mythical creature in order to explain the events that define their culture. The most common myths are within Greek mythology that help to explain culture and gave the world around them a meaning. These were an important part of their everyday life and help to explain religious practices and help influence art and literature years after its…
Buddhism is one of the most popular religions in the world. It can be traced back to 563 B.C.E. with the birth of Siddhartha Gautama. He is more commonly known as the Buddha, meaning the “Awakened One”. Buddhism spread quickly throughout Asia and other regions of the world but it remained virtually unknown in the West until the last fifty years. The teachings and practices of Buddhism were spread through three main channels: “Western scholars; the work of philosophers, writers and artists; and the arrival of Asian immigrants who have brought various forms of Buddhism with them to Europe, North America and Australia” (BuddhaNet.net, 2008). My mother, Nguyen Thi Lien Kirk (Lien), and her two close friends, Nhu Lan Nguyen (Lan) and Cuc Pigeon (Cuc), are three examples of immigrants from Vietnam who brought the ideals of Buddhism to the United States following the Vietnam War.…
Buddhism is a way of life that is continuously growing due to a variety of reasons. The word, Buddhism, derives from “budhi”, which means “to awaken” (White, 1993). There are various, diverse types of this philosophy. The Dhamma or truth, which is the core of this instruction, is the only constant (White, 1993). This is one on many worldviews prevalent in today’s society. This particular worldview, Buddhism, will be compared and contrasted with the biblical worldview.…
Hinduism and Buddhism, both ancient Indian major belief systems, were instrumental in shaping the everyday life as well as a life span of ancient Indians. More of progressive enlightened philosophy than a religion, Buddhism illuminated the path to righteousness, good heartedness, honor and virtue through the Eight Fold path and the Four Noble Truths. Hinduism emphasizes asceticism (refraining from the “wants of life and its worldly pleasure”) and reincarnation, or rebirth of an individual in the hopes of the ascension of one’s soul based on the results of the past lives and the attempt to be released of the “wheel of life” cycle.…
This is the first time that I have read Greek Myths. Frankly, I am fond of this much better than the Bible. Apparently, I can understand the Greek Myths easier than Bible stories. For example, when the Bible is talking about God’s kindness, it doesn’t write clearly and specifically, which sometimes makes me confused. In addition, God invariably does evil to people who don’t believe in him, so I really don’t understand his kindness. In the contrast, when the Greek story is talking about Prometheus’ kindness, it reads concretely. For instance, he created men, and took responsibility for his men. He made an attempt to perfect them, asking Athene for instincts, supreme gift, intelligence, asking Zephyrs for better living conditions, green grass,…
The Hindu idea of reincarnation and Buddhist idea of Nirvana were both captivating thoughts for people of that era, but which was more important? While differing in social aspects, they are both important influential religions that helped shape India’s history. Buddhism has its own unique aspects and rules, some of which were retained from Hinduism, that helped construct a sustainable social structure through unification, peace, and order.…
Hinduism and Buddhism are both eastern traditions with much to say about the human condition as well as the reason human beings exist at all. In some ways they are different while also being similar in other ways. In this essay, those differences will be discussed and the similarities examined for their message. In conclusion, we will examine what these two faiths offer to the human beings of the twenty-first century.…
Ahimsa is the belief of nonviolence, which Buddhism justifies by reminding followers that all life experience suffering and additional pain is not needed in this world. Also, Buddhism teaches the belief in the cycle of rebirth, however, without a belief in a soul; Buddhists believe it is the parts of the individual’s personality that reform in the new life. Finally, Buddhism teaches followers about nirvana granting release from the cycle of rebirth. Nirvana is a state of bliss without pain, and liberation from the cycle of rebirth and Buddhists believe that it can be obtained within one’s lifetime, rather than at death (Molloy,…
