Buck was a strong and tough dog. However, he didn’t start that way. Being around his team, helped him to become stronger. All of the intense fights, over food or higher power paid off. Strength was extremely important because it gave him a reputation since it won him fights. These gory and ugly fights killed some dogs. The dogs wouldn’t give up a fight unless it was physically impossible to keep going. Buck started using his instincts more and more throughout the book. In a way, this helped him to be more ready for attacks from any angry dog.
There are reasonable ways to solve conflict. Of course, talking about it and trying to end the argument works, but these dogs only solved problems by fighting. However, Spitz became dangerous to be around. When he turned into a rival, Buck always had to watch his back. One night, Buck left his shelter for food and when he came back, Spitz had taken it over. The two prepared to start fighting when starving huskies invaded the camp, in search of food. Buck got attacked by three huskies meanwhile Spitz still nipped at him.
