Part 1: Select 4 groups that you are the least familiar with from the following list:

African Americans
Native Americans
Latino(a)
Asian Americans
Jewish Americans
Arab/Muslim Americans
Single mothers
Displaced homemakers
People over 60
Unemployed people over 50
Immigrants

Part 2: Write a 50- to 100-word response to each question:

Group 1: People over 60

1) Describe your assumptions, beliefs, and perceptions about members of this group. People over 60 are most likely already retired and don’t work. Their health is not as good as the younger generation and they may visit the hospital and doctors often. They are set in old ways from their past and don’t like to experience new ideas or change. Many are racist because this is how they grew up.

2) When you think about working professionally with members of this group, are there traits, characteristics, or other issues about the group that you would be curious about, concerned about, or intimidated by? Why would understanding diversity issues be important to you as a human services worker? When working with this group I would be concerned about their overall health physically and mentally. Many diseases such as arthritis and AL timers’ disease occur at this age. Also hip and back problems. I would also be curious if they receive any financial help or health insurance to help with expenses. Understanding diversity at this age is important because there are different cultures in the older generation and they may have different expectations, views, and ideas about human service workers. Caring for them individually as a person is important.

3) How could advanced knowledge of the group address concerns and assumptions? Advanced knowledge of medical history and the medical field could help with this group. Also understanding different diseases and conditions that affect this group will help when treating the clients and helping them. It will take less stress of off the client if you

This is about the film, Home Alone, a classic 1990s movie under the direction of Chris Columbus, and which starred Macaulay Culkin for the character of the 8-year old Kevin McCallister. The other members of the cast were: John Heard, playing the character of Peter McCallister, the father; Catherine O’Hara for the character of Mrs. McCallister; Daniel Stern for the character of the burglar named Marv; and Joe Pesci playing the character of the other burglar named Harry. The other characters were: Kevin’s brother, Buzz; Uncle Frank; and an old man named Marley. From the title alone, you can guess that the story revolves around someone who was home by himself or herself. The title does not suggest anything more than that and one needs to watch the movie to know what happens. Kevin belongs to a big family. The family decided to go to Paris for Christmas. On the night before they were to leave, there was a big storm and it caused power outage. The family overslept and woke up late because the alarm failed to go off. Waking up late, they were in a mad rush to the airport and didn’t notice that one boy was left behind. The boy was, of course, Kevin. That marked the start of an exciting family adventure.…

The Earth’s largest phylum is Arthropoda, including centipedes, millipedes, crustaceans, and insects. Insects are the largest and most successful class of animals on Earth. This success, zoologists believe, is attributed from certain biological traits such as their small size or ability to fly for some (Postlethwait & Hopson, 2010). The exoskeleton of most insects supports them inside but also protects them from outside. John Meyer, professor at NCSU, explains as a "suit of armor", the exoskeleton can resist both physical and chemical attack (2007). He also covers how their small size allows them to hide, flight allows them to escape, high fertility and high fecundity allows for a large reproductive potential, metamorphosis promotes survival, and their ability to adapt easily (2007). All these characteristics listed above amongst several others are the reason why insects are the most successful animals on earth.…

The actions I recommend that Cindy take to help Jessica relate more effectively to the baby boomers and older coworkers and customers is to enforce corporate policies about diversity and send her to diversity training. Most professional corporate establishments have been in recent years very optimistic and determined in establishing diversity. It is also one of the key elements in being a strong leader because it represents not only an individual’s character, but an understanding of different people’s culture, race and ethnicity and even generation. Diversity training would allow Jessica to understand cross generational diversity relating to the older and younger workers.…

The numbers of minorities in the United States has significantly increased within the last decade. More specifically, older adults ages 65 and older also are becoming more culturally diverse. Expectedly, these changes in the population changes are also affecting the composition of facilities that care for older adults with functional limitations. Due to the fast growing number of minorities, nursing staff should begin to implement cultural competence to specifically meet the needs of their older patients. According to McBride, cultural competence…

In American society, it seems that we treasure youth and either fear or are disappointed to reach old age. Our culture has a big influence on how the elderly are perceived has stereotyped this population, mostly seen through the media. Even in films, TV, books, and magazines old people are often portrayed as frail, weak, klutzy, or indecisive. We should look treat our elderly with respect for the fact that they are more associated with experience, knowledge, and wisdom than a younger population. Ageism describes this discrimination against the old due to misconceptions and ignorance.…

Society has tended to overlook, undervalue, and stereotype the elderly. The stereotypes are concepts produced by the media and perceived by the audience as truth. Seniors are often thought of as unproductive, alienated, and ineffectual. Parsons (1993) notes that society views the aged as an "increasing burden on society because they are unproductive, increasingly frail, and vulnerable with their decreasing ability to perform activities of daily living, and frequently poor mobility". Like racism and sexism, ageism is a social disease fed by stereotypes. Elders are lumped together under the heading of “old” and attributed a demeaning set of characteristics: senile, sickly, unattractive, greedy, cranky, and child-like. These stereotypes are conveyed and reinforced by the mass media.…
