‘Weapons Training’ was written by Bruce Dawe. Who became one of Australia’s most well known poets in the 1960’s. In 1959 he joined the RAAF, Royal Australian Air Force, and left to become a teacher in 1968. As his occupation in the RAAF, Bruce served as an air force officer, a person of high rankings. And from his years fighting in the Vietnam War, and serving our country, Dawe – along with many others, wrote a substantial amount of protest, or anti-war poems. Many of which became extremely well known.

My personal interpretation of this poem is an instructor, or person of high authority, teaching new recruits about their weapons, and the true experience of war. This is done to ensure that the new soldiers

He expects the readers to know to some extent the horrors of war and conflict. Although he provides graphic imagery, he expects the responders to be able to relate them to their own personal experiences, therefore enhancing the quality of this poem by creating a link between the readers and death due to war and conflict. Most importantly, he uses language to attract attention to his views on war and its horrors. He represents this conflict in the form of vivid imagery which adds to the emotional aspect of the text; thus creating interest through tension and the readers’ past experience. Beginning with ‘and’ shows that the sergeant has been talking when the reader enters the picture, and his language is a continuous stream. Therefore, giving the impression to the reader as if they are inside a soldier and he had not been listening and only rejoined the conversation. The speech never does come to a full stop; there are rhetorical questions to raise the involvement of the reader “only to find back home because of your position; your chances of turning the key in the ignition; considerably reduced? Alright now suppose..." In this example, Bruce Dawe uses a rhetorical question to create an atmosphere that is strict and disciplined. The type of language used, is definitely a technique that attracts the audience. Different forms of poetry are used in the text. On the second line of the poem, an onomatopoeia is used ‘and when I say eyes right I want to hear those eyeballs click and the gentle pitter patter of falling dandruff’. Onomatopoeia is the formation or use of words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to. ‘Pitter patter’ is an example of this. This poem includes a hyperbole, which is defined as a figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect. The poem builds up to the end saying ‘you know what you are? You’re dead dead dead’ this is an exaggeration to emphasise the conflict of

    The drill sergeant in the poem “Weapons Training” written by Bruce Dawe, is portrayed as a bully and a very moody, tough and angry character. Dawe has showed this through many techniques. For example, in the first stanza he insults one of the soldiers by saying “what are you laughing at you in the back row with the unsightly fat between your elephant ears”. This shows that he drill sergeant is a bully but also a teacher who wants the soldiers to concentrate as they will be going in to war. Other than insulting the soldiers, the drill sergeant also makes the Vietnamese soldiers sound bad and disgusting to make the soldiers have less remorse for them when they have fight in the war. For example, at the very end of the first stanza he says “All right now suppose for the sake of argument you’ve got a number-one blockage and a brand-new pack of Charlies are coming at you, you can smell the fish-sauce breath hot on the back of your stupid neck all right now what are you going to do about it”. By saying this, the drill sergeant makes the soldiers feel less hesitant when they have to kill the enemy (Vietcong).…

    He has done this by using the rhyme pattern of ABCB. The use of Slessor 's rhyme creates a sense of flow to the audience. This particular statement works well with the beach scene featured in the poem and the amount of dead men continually sinuously into the beach. The line "the convoys of dead soldiers come" reinstates this idea. Slessor also proposes that war is inevitable and always continue just like the dead men. Slessor 's purpose of half rhymes also creates a standstill in the poem, the audience stops for a moment to reflect on the realities of war and how dreadful and disrespectful the dead men are treated after they have fought and served for their country. We also meditate for what has happened to the men and what really happens after death at war. To reinforce Slessor 's purpose he uses the lines "wavers and fades, the purple drips, the breath of the wet season has washed their inscriptions as blue as drowned men 's lips."     Bruce Dawe has used a variety of literary devices to represent specific marginalised groups in ways that challenge their reader’s perceptions. Two of his poems; ‘Homecoming’ and ‘Weapons Training’ are key and transparent examples of literary devices being utilised to represent specific marginalised groups. Both of these poems were set during the 1950’s, with Vietnam being written to represent soldiers pre-war and homecoming to represent soldiers returning to Australia. During this time period, the Australian nation lived via a very patriarchal manner, and had the utmost respect and admiration of their soldiers that fought during the world wars. However, it has been noted in Australian history that there was very little to no compassion given towards the returning soldiers from Vietnam; Homecoming is an attack at society for their reverence and respect-or lack of. This represents the marginalised soldiers from the Vietnam War, for the War Veterans from WW1 and WW2 had always traditionally returned home to a hero’s welcome, greeted at the airway and society’s full support to the brave soldiers who had risked and possibly given their lives for the country. Weapons Training is another war poem, but this time targets young soldiers pre-war on what can be assumed as a final addressing before taking into the ranks, this poem however various from the previous, the soldiers would have gone into the War with the expectation of being given thanks and praise for their bravery, instead they were barked at, abused and insulted. Dawe has represented both of the marginalised soldiers in both of the respective poems through his use of literary devices which can all fall under the brackets of a) Imagery and b) language, integrating into some finer details.…

    The poem ‘Weapons Training’ written by Bruce Dawe is monologue from military instructor that is lecturing recruits on what to do in a battle situation. Dawe expresses his ideas about military life using techniques such as humorous tone and vivid imagery. Dawe uses humorous tone in the poem to express how the speaker is of a higher rank and therefore very self-confident, because of this he humiliates his recruits. An example of this is when the speaker says ‘open that drain you call a mind and listen’ the speaker says this to make the recruits feel small and defenceless so they fall in line. This technique is also used in the movie ‘Friday’ where smokey is telling Craig about how deebo (the neighbourhood bully) has some kind of mind control over him but is really fearful of deebo. An example of this is when smokey says “I got mind control over Deebo. He be like 'shut the f**k up.' I be quiet. But when he leave, I be talking again.” This is all so the recruits pay attention to what he says so they hopefully survive battle. Vivid imagery is used by Dawe to show the recruits and readers what can happen in war, ‘they’re on you and your tripe’s are around your neck’, and this is saying that if the recruits don’t listen they may be killed.…

    Both poets, Vernon Scannell and Simon Armitage use varied language techniques to describe the pain that the other person in their relationship is feeling and how this other person in this relationship needs to be protected from being hurt. In ‘The Manhunt’, the injured soldier in the poem is being compared to fine china, for example his collar-bone is described as “the damaged, porcelain collar-bone.” To the reader, this shows and emphasises how extreme his injuries really are and how fragile they have made the soldier. His punctured lung is described as extremely delicate and as if it’s “parachute silk”. This use of imagery show how concerned and tender his wife is for her husband and how she wants to do all she can to protect him. Vernon Scannell also uses the war imagery in ‘Nettles’ as he describes his sons accident. He compares the nettles to weapons and says that they look like “spears” and he later goes on to call them a “regiment”. The use of imagery that Scannell has used help the reader to understand what the poem is really about, and that is the helplessness of parents trying to always be there to protect their children, when this is not always going to be possible.     As the Army transitions from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, the organization is well served to take a long look in the mirror. After ten plus years of deployments, our combat tested warriors are sure to possess more than enough valuable knowledge to reinforce and improve upon our status as a profession. A TRADOC published paper explains “to be a professional is to understand, embrace, and competently practice the expertise of the profession.” I believe the profession of arms exists and there are many components that reinforce this argument. Among these components, initial entry training and institutional learning, shared values, and a monopoly on our mission are three of the most important tenants. All Soldiers must graduate from Basic Combat Training and all officers must graduate from a commissioning source. Similar to medical school or law school in other traditional professions, these schools set the foundation for years of practice that will lead to expert work. From the first day in these schools, Soldiers are taught the seven Army values and the Soldiers creed. Comparable to the Hippocratic Oath, these words set basic principles all Soldiers must live by.     Bruce Dawe uses dialogue manipulatively and effectively in his poem “Weapons Training” it is an excellent example of how dialogue may be used to provide meaning and substance to a poem. The poem is created around the dramatic monologue of an army sergeant to his platoon during the years of the Vietnam War. It concentrates upon the theme of war yet meaning is placed upon the structure of the poem and the accompanying imagery which allows for a variety of apparent interpretations. Being in the form of a dramatic monologue, the focus of the poem is based around the sergeant’s use of language which captures the initial speech and attitudes of the stereotypical military figure. His voice is aggressive and demanding such as the hyperbole “When I say eyes right I want to hear those eyeballs click” which enforces a strong sense of discipline and authority over his recruits.     Tone is used by Rosenberg to furthermore reveal the theme in this poem. The two that he uses are musing and contemplative tones. The author uses the air of musing in this poem throughout the beginning few lines of the poem. When a soldier is immersed into war they are exposed to the death of their friends and peers, they are taken from their family, and they are forced to repel any emotions. The soldier who is telling his story is sitting in the war trench at sunrise or in his words, the “druid Time”. The Druids are an ancient civilization who at sunrise made sacrifices to their gods. This leads readers to believe that the soldier is sitting among what could be interpreted the human “sacrifices” that war had taken. Around him there are soldiers lying dead for seemingly no good reason. To be talking in the tone of curiosity rather than pain and horror in that situation, it shows that he has numbed himself to the feelings that would naturally come to him because he is so used to seeing the display of death. The other tone that is used by the author is a tone of contemplation. Rosenberg shifts from talking to himself, to directly addressing the rat, asking questions and drawing his own conclusions. The soldier gets more and more demanding of the rat as the poem goes on, eventually asking it, what do the eyes of mankind say. The soldier uses the rat to ask all of these questions because he knows he shouldn’t be thinking emotionally. He can’t control himself and he has to let off steam by talking to a rat, which can’t respond or judge him.
