Broiler chickens are a type of chicken bred primarily for meat and egg production. Broilers are a domesticated fowl and they are hybrid of red junglefowl. Broiler chickens are, for the most part, raised in family owned farms. Around 95% of broiler chickens are raised on family farms who have contracts with large companies and the remaining 5% of chickens are raised on company owned farms. Around ten billion broiler chickens are produced each year. Broiler chickens are typically raised in mass quantities in large controlled barns. The large barns that broilers are typically raised in are temperature controlled, extremely ventilated, and very sanitary to prevent any sickness/illness in the birds. These barns are completely lit around
