Shaki, or Napoleon A. Chagnon’s 15 month enculturation with the Yanomamo tribe, Bisaasi-teri is characterized by fear, discomfort, loneliness, nosiness, and invaluable experiences through relationships and modesty about human culture. Chagnon documents the experience through the struggle and discovery surrounding his proposed research, as his lifestyle gradually comes in sync with the natural functions of his community. Much of his focus and time was consumed by identification of genealogical records, and the establishment of informants and methods of trustworthy divulgence. Marriage, sex, and often resulting violence are the foremost driving forces within Yanomamo, and everything that we consider part of daily routine is completely unknown and inconsequential to them. Traveling between neighboring tribes, he draws conclusions about intertribal relations, especially concerning marriage and raiding. Chagnon deals with cultural complexity that takes time to decipher, and in process, potential risk. Confronted with seemingly trivial situations, they often become unexpected phenomena and Chagnon’s adherence to documentation is amazing. He encounters personal epiphanies that I find intriguing, related to privacy and hygiene. This report becomes an inspiring document of an extreme anthropologic lifestyle as much as it is a cultural essay.…

“And when you get the chance to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance.” (Sillers,2010, ll.8.&9.) If you had the chance to sit it out or dance, would you dance? This amazingly, inspirational song was written by Tia Sillers when she was at her breaking point, sitting on the beach just after going through a heart wrenching divorce. It really is peculiar that such an inspirational and beautiful song such as “I hope you dance” was written at such a devastating time. As she sat beside the ocean, pondering on all that she been through, she realized, things aren’t so bad. She interprets this in her lyrics by saying “I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean.” (Sillers,2010, l.5) “I hope you dance” is unmistakabley pulled from deep within Siller’s soul. Anyone who hears this song, and truly takes these lyrics to heart could undoubtedly pull themselves out of whatever strife they may be going through at any given time. With Mrs. Siller’s inspirational words, she truly has created the most breath taking song of our time.…

This song had a deep impact on me over the spring break of 2016 when I had to face something few should ever have to go through. Over that week I decided to be the caretaker for my nonagenarian grandmother, in order to let my parents go on a well-deserved vacation. Little did I know this week would become one of the most challenging weeks of my life. When I was taking care of her she had a serious fall and broke her hip in two places. While we were in the hospital for surgery she began to have violent hallucinations due to the pain medication she was on, resulting in a delay on the surgery. In the midst of all this chaos I had “Victorious in Love” playing on repeat. The song goes on to say, “This Mountain seems so high God… And in my weakness be made strong”. This resonated with me because I was able use those lyrics to muster up the strength I needed to face the dozens of unexpected obstacles that came my way. Without this song I would not have had the courage to overcome this trying…

    Inch by Inch Analysis

Tony D’Amato opens up the speech with his gruff and old voice, giving his audience an impression of his many experiences in life, making it perfect for this particular speech. The first section of the speech mainly focuses on building rapport with the players. The players of the team have all started playing individually, to outshine one another. This has resulted in many loses on the fields. In his speech he tells them “we heal as team or we are going to crumble”, letting his players know that, the only way to win this is playing the game as a team. To emphasize his point he requires the players to “believe him”. He then declares that if they keep playing as individuals, they are going to stay in “hell”, making the players feel humiliated by their actions and arguably, lose the player’s certainty. However, he asserts them that they can “climb out of hell” if they focus on “one inch, at a time”, making the team focus on small controllable steps and making them pay attention to every detail of the game. Not to mention the encouragement he creates to increase their will to fight for every slightest win of territory. His “inch by inch” statement is the most powerful phrase throughout the speech; it creates a powerful visual image they will remember for the rest of their lives and a kind of motto they will keep…
