Brandy's Cancer: A Short Story
Once upon a time, there was a boy named Brandy, who lived in Brooklyn, NY. Brandy has been living with cancer for ten years, but he refuses to share this with anyone. As a result of Brandy’s cancer, he suffers from severe depression, so he has become an extremely introverted kid. Brandy is excited to start high school, but his family has lost a significant amount of money over the years due to paying for Brandy’s cancer treatments. “Mom, how am I going to go to school showing up in clothes like this? Everyone is going to make fun of me”, said Brandy pouting as he stared down at his ragged clothes. “Honey, I’m sorry but we just don’t have the money to buy you new clothes. Remember, other people’s opinions of you don’t matter. Keep your chin …show more content…
Brandy stood in front of his mirror shaking as he prepared for the reunion. When Brandy arrived, he immediately spotted John in the room. However, he noticed that John was in a wheelchair. John spotted Brandy and wheeled over to him. “Hey Brandy, so um how have you been?”, said John. “I’m good. What happened to you? How come you’re in a wheelchair?”, asked Brandy. “Well, I got into a car accident and I’m paralyzed from the waist down”, replied John. “I’m so sorry to hear that”, said Brandy sympathetically. “Hey, I need to ask you a favor. I hear you’ve been having a successful career as an engineer, so I was wondering if you could lend me some money. There’s this surgery that can fix my condition, but I can’t afford it”, said John. “But I thought that you are from the richest family in this town?”, replied Brandy. “Well, we aren’t so rich anymore. What goes around comes around right? I guess I shouldn’t have been as bad as I was back in high school”, John said sighing. Despite what John did to Brandy in high school, Brandy decided to move past that and help John out because Brandy was once in a similar position that John is now facing. After seeing that John had changed and realized that he shouldn’t have treated the other kids the way he did in high school, Brandy was able to completely let go of all the grudges Brandy held against John. Jeannette and her siblings were constantly getting bullied from other kids, in school and the neighborhood, for being too poor. The Walls’ children also underwent a lot of bullying from their parents. During Jeannette’s first days at her school in Welch, she got an abundance of bullying from a group of girls. Jeannette describes one of their encounters, “‘This girl ain’t got no buttons on her coat!’ she shouted. That seemed to give her the license she needed. She pushed me in the chest, and I fell backward. I tried to get up, but all three girls started kicking me” (139). Jeannette knew that she looked poor and recognized that the girls were badgering her for being poor, and that they got their power because they thought they were better than Jeannette. Jeannette’s tone of struggling and defeat displays how she’s tired of getting pushed around and bullied for the social class that she lived in, which drove her to become better and make big goals for herself. While recalling one of these many fights, Jeannette admits her acceptance of her living condition when she says, “As we fought, they called me poor and ugly and dirty, and it was hard to argue with” (140). Other kids were always teasing the Walls’ about their living conditions and seemed to find joy in hurting the children physically and verbally for living in the poverty that they were in. Jeannette’s use of the words “it’s hard to argue with” shows her…

Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros is a story about a girl and her insecurities of wearing an ugly sweater that she is accused of owning by her teacher. The overall purpose of this memoir is to share her experience with the readers so that they will be more aware and will not have to go through the traumatic experience like she did. When the teacher asks the class whose sweater it is, someone says it is hers. The teacher put the sweater on her desk and when she tried to get rid of it, the teacher made her wear it. She started crying and put her head down trying to hide herself. Near the end of class, another girl jumped up claiming the ugly sweater was hers. The worst part is that it is her birthday and she has to deal with all these negative emotions. The except says, “In my head I'm thinking how long till lunchtime, how long till I can take the red sweater and throw over the schoolyard fence, or leave it hanging on a parking meter, or bunch it up into a little ball and toss it in the alley”( Cisneros 2). This shows that she started to be more self-conscious about herself and is embarrassed to be seen in an ugly sweater.…

One day as I was getting more familiar with the school, I stopped for a minute to take a look at my surroundings, I saw girls dressed in long girly dresses, others having breakfast in the cafeteria while preserving their legs closed and some absorbed in the illusion that they must look good all the time to be the girl they were taught to be.…

The nurse walked in and said “She’s just taking a nap right now, just try not to disturb her,” Rudy walked over to his mom and looked at her skin that looked as pale as the snow. “Hey mom, how are you doing?,” Rudy whispered as he slowly creeped up on his mom. She opened her eyes to see Rudy by her side. “Hey bud, how’s your day,” mom said in a raspy voice. “Good, but did are you good, do you not have cancer anymore!?!,” Rudy’s voice raised as he started shaking in excitement. “They’re not sure, I’m hoping that it’s fine, but I don’t know,” mom replied as she struggled to sit up. These same kids who bullied me in middle school were acting like my good friends cheering me on whether it was my failing effort in Gotcha or chanting “chug, chug, chug” as I ruined my small stomach. Just hours ago, I had slowly crept on the bus, book in hand, to be dissected by the eyes of 50 upperclassmen, swiftly dismissed as I scampered to a seat in the very front, feeling very alone. I hoped and prayed that no one would ask for my name. All the memories of my lisp and stuttering making my name sound like a foreign language rushed to my mind. I had never been to Younglife club before, and it was uncommon for someone to just show up for the weekend camp. I had heard that the people who went to Younglife were heathens, and by the continious yelling I heard from the back of the bus as I tried to finish my book, I believed all the rumors. My mom had thrust her little Christian boy into the lions den or more appropriate the Dawgs Den, half of these students were in the obnoxious student section at our school “The Dawg Pound”. The goal of the weekend was just to survive, my mind was already made up that I was going to plead to my mom for us to move out of Morgan County. I hated my high school and knew that there was no way I would have a pleasant four years there.…

I never had many friends. I was always the loner kid, sitting in the corner, not talking or even looking at anyone, you know? The one with the glasses, the braces, the ‘uncool’ shoes; the classic victim. For as long as I could remember I’d been picked on. Whether it was someone thieving my books, or pushing me over ‘by accident’, there was always something. The awful thing was, nobody seemed to care. The teachers chose not to see it, and my parents just told me to deal with it; “just ignore them” was one of their favourite lines.…
