Boun 1019: A Critical Analysis
There were many challenges I faced while doing FOUN 1019 but, one of the areas I was extremely weak in was critically analysing sentences. During the first half of this course, one of the main areas instructors focused on was critical analysis. Grammardog was founded in 2001 by Mary Jane McKinney, a high school English teacher and dedicated grammarian. She and other experienced English teachers in both high school and college regard grammar and style as the key to unlocking the essence of an author. Their philosophy, that grammar and literature are best understood when learned together, led to the formation of Grammardog.com, a means of sharing knowledge about the structure and patterns of language unique to specific authors. These patterns are what make a great book a great book. The arduous task of analyzing works for grammar and style has yielded a unique product, guaranteed to enlighten the reader of literary classics. Grammardog’s strategy is to put the author’s words under the microscope. The result yields an increased appreciation of the art of writing and awareness of the importance and power of language. Versutia Capital has had tremendous growth and great success since its establishment in early 2003. Its recent period of lower performance is alarming, but through an analysis of the provided information, we were able to identify that the decline in performance can largely be attributed to ineffective leadership. The causes of this problem have nothing to do with Leslie as the current leader, but with the environment in which she leads. We believe that the following three elements are the main causes of Versutia’s ineffective leadership: an organizational structure that did not fit the changing needs of the company, a culture divergent from Versutia’s maxims, and poor communication and lack of feedback.…

The study in discussion would like to help the understanding of this constructive, rhetorical view of reading. Throughout the article, Haas and Flower emphasize how students “are good readers in the traditional sense… yet, they paraphrase rather than analyze, summarize rather than criticize texts” (170). This brings up two key points that Haas and Flower discuss in a relation to rhetorical reading strategies, in student reader-writers.…

In this essay “How to Read Like a Writer” Mike Bunn, claims that college students should distinguish choices the writer made and decide whether they want to implement them in their writing; enhancing their level of writing. Bunn explains that reading like a writer is a strategy that questions, analyses and criticizes a text to make readers look at the structure, the style, the word choice in regards to several factors like: the purpose, the audience, and the genre. The author concludes that this strategy will also signal the writer’s argument. The essay ends by providing a step-by-step example to obtain structural analysis and familiarize students with this strategy.…

Critical reading is a way of analyzing texts that involves an active examination of each argument in the text and the evidence supporting it. Critical reading helps to identify the ideas in the text, the position the writer takes on the issues discussed, and the underlying logic of the discussion. That is, critical reading helps to decipher the writer’s way of thinking.…

Over the course of Quarter, I composed more than a few FRQs. Throughout my many in-class essays, I learned not only about rhetorical analysis, but also some tendencies I have as a writer. In all four of my essays, the most prominent trend I exemplified was a lack of focus on certain pieces of my analysis. Often, I would provide a strong analysis of certain evidence, but then would begin to stray from my original point. Occasionally, my sentences proved nothing, such as when I wrote that, “This major depiction of the two vastly different sides of the soldier’s lives makes the men seem more real and human”. Another pattern that was prevalent in my FRQs was writing one or two sentences that seemed clumsy or awkward to the reader. One such sentence…
