Book Report: The Maze Runner
The Maze Runner, written by James Dashner, is about a future world, where sun flares have demolished most of the earth. At the beginning of the book, a sixteen year old boy wakes up in a metal box with no recollection of who he is, or where he came from. In fact, the only thing he can remember is his name. The box begins moving slowly upward, until it gets to the top of the hole, and stops, as two metal doors swing open. When the doors open, Thomas discovers a group of boys around the same age as him. Pulling him out of the box, they explain where he is. He is in a place they have named the Glade, which is surrounded by a maze. However Thomas wants to know much more than this, resulting in him annoying the leaders of the Glade, Alby and Newt, with more questions than they care to answer. …show more content…
He is stopped quite forcefully, and he soon finds out why. Out in the maze are deadly robots called Grievers, that sting you with poison. A poison that, if not given the antidote when stung, will kill you. The next day, Ably decides to go into the maze with a runner, named Minho. During their time in the maze, Alby gets stung by a Griever, leaving Minho to attempt to half drag Alby back to the entrance of the maze before the doors close. Minho and Alby make it about a hundred feet away before the doors begin to close, and Thomas, with the rest of the boys from the glade watch with anticipation. Just before the doors close, Thomas decides to go into the maze with Alby and Minho, and to the rest of the boys, Thomas had just signed his death sentence. You see, no one had ever survived a night in the maze before, because they had always been stung by the Grievers, and died before the doors reopened in the morning, but somehow, Thomas and Minho managed to keep themselves and Alby alive all

When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls. Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift. Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. Kody Scott grew up in South Central L.A. during the nineteen-sixties and seventies, soon after the creation of the Crips. Raised in poverty without a father, and a full family raised solely by his mother, Kody Scott led the stereotypical "ghetto" life, a poor and broken home. However he does not blame this on his own personal decision to join the Crips while only eleven year's old. The allure of the respect and "glory" that "bangers" got, along with the unity of the "set"(name for the specific gang) is what drew him into the gang. Once joined, he vowed to stay in the "set" for life, and claimed that banging was his life. After many years of still believing this, he eventually realized that the thug life was no longer for him, and that gangs were a problem on society and the "Afrikan" race(page 382-383).…
