Bonnie: Want and Maria
Bonnie

Wang is a Chinese student who is studying in Drexel. She is living on Drexel campus. Maria is Wang’s American roomie.

This is the first week after Wang came to the U.S. Maria decided to throw a welcome party for her this Thursday. Maria wants to ask for Wang’s opinions.

Maria: Hey, Wang. Are you free this Thursday?

Wang: I think so. What’s up?

Maria: Listen. I want to throw a welcome party for you! I got a lot of friends in Drexel. I want to introduce you---my Chinese roomie to them!

Wang: uhhhhhh….A party?

Maria: Yes! A party! Don’t you think this is an amazing idea? I can cook some traditional American food for you. We can have cupcakes together!

Wang: I’d love to…But….

Maria: Do you want to get drunk? I have some beers in the refrigerator! Oh my god, I cannot wait to have this party!

Wang: Maria…

Maria: What’s wrong, Wang?

Wang: I cannot drink…

Maria: That’s fine, Wang. Just a little bit! Just for fun.

Wang: But…I am a little bit shy… My English is not good…

Maria: Don’t worry! My friends are all friendly! They all want to meet you! You know what. They all admire me because I get a Chinese roomie!

Wang: But…I have class this Friday. I am afraid I could not wake up on Friday morning.

Maria: That’s fine, Wang. If you don’t want to throw it on Thursday, I can put it on weekend!

Wang: Thank you very much Maria…I really want to meet your friend too! Of course you can have a party with them. I still think that my English is bad. I cannot communicate with them smoothly. I will meet them and say hello to them at party time. But I am afraid I cannot join you guys…

Maria: I promise you we won’t make fun of your English!

Wang: uhhhhh….

Maria: Wang, you don’t need to worry so much! I know this is the first week you are in the U.S. I can understand that you are a little bit shy. But I think you are lonely. Don’t you want to make some new friends?

Wang:… I am not lonely… I have already got some

Judy Yung wrote an article on Chinese American Women in the early 19th century. Her article centers on a Chinese American newspaper call Chung Sai Yat. This newspaper helps to reveal the connection between China and the United States through Chinese American Women. The article reveals the ties that effected and connected these women to their homes, but not just those homes in the United States, and China, as well. The essay reveals that Chinese American Women drew their hope, courage, and inspiration from both the United States and China. This shows that women were bound to both different countries in a complex way.…
