Bonita Johnson Abortion Case Study
After years of failed infertility treatment and five abortions, the labeling of being “barren” stripped Bonita Johnson, a then resident of the Washington, D.C. area, into a state of desperation. While sitting at her work desk, she begins noticing a stream of blood running down her leg. Being familiar with such event, she wraps a towel around her waist, bypasses her co-workers, and makes her way to the nearest hospital.

Women who had to carry unwanted pregnancies had more negative outcomes with physical health and economic stability, such as their higher rates of hypertension, which is unusually high blood pressure and chronic pelvic pain, after the birth. Those women were also three times as likely to end up in poverty two years later, than women who had gotten the abortion they had wanted. Even though most of the women grow to love the child they had originally not wanted, five percent still feel that they would have rather had gone through with the abortion. A very complex and ongoing study has found no correlation between having symptoms of anxiety and depression, and with having an abortion, but those who did not get abortions did show more signs of anxiety over the next few months after being turned away by abortion centers. The children born from unwanted pregnancies had definite disadvantages.
