Body Armour Procedure
introduction
The purpose of this scientific poster is to examine 2 different types of liquid body armour. Liquid body armour is protective clothing with liquid chemicals designed to strengthen it to absorb and/or deflect slashing, stabbing and penetrating attacks by weapons. The poster will discuss two different liquid used to strengthen kevlar (modern armour material). The first is a colloid of silicon dioxide particles suspended in polyethylene oxide. this liquid is a Shear thickening fluid which hardens on impact. the second liquid used is a magnetorheological (MR) fluid. MR fluids are oils that are filled with iron particles and can change its viscosity to a solid state when a magnetic field is applied to it. The third section of the poster

A STF is a fluid that will turn into a solid state when it encounters mechanical stress or shear. Once the STF encounters the shear it behaves like a solid for a few milliseconds. It then returns to a liquid state. (This contrasts with a shear-thinning fluid, like paint, which becomes thinner when it is agitated or shaken). The STF is a colloid, made of tiny particles suspended in a liquid. These particles repel each other slightly. This means that the particles float easily and evenly throughout the liquid without clumping together or settling to the bottom. But when a sudden impact or shear hits the liquid , the repulsive forces of the particles are overwhelmed and they stick together, forming masses called hydro clusters. When the energy from the impact dissipates, the particles begin to repel one another again and the hydro clusters fall apart and forms back into a liquid.(A common example of a STF is equal proportions of cornstarch and water). The shear thickening fluid used in liquid body armor is made of silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles suspended in polyethylene oxide (H−[O−CH2−CH2]n−OH). Silicon dioxide is found in sand and quartz, and polyethylene oxide is a polymer commonly used in laxatives and lubricants. When the body armour is being made, the STF is diluted in ethanol, then kevlar is saturated with the liquid and it is placed in an oven to evaporate the ethanol. The STF …show more content…
MR fluids are oils that are filled with iron particles and can change its viscosity from a liquid to a solid state when a magnetic field is applied to it. MR fluid differs from ferrofluid, which contains ferromagnetic particles with a surfactant to inhibit clumping because it thickens when magnetized. The iron particles are surrounded by surfactants to help keep them suspended and to reduce the surface tension in the fluid. Although the particles are tiny, the magnetic field applied to it will dramatically change the viscosity of the fluid. The iron particles will usually be between 20 and 40 percent of the fluid. The use of MR fluid in body armour will greatly strengthen conventional armour. With the right combination of density, particle shape and field strength, MR fluid can change from a liquid to a very thick solid. As with shear-thickening fluid, this change could dramatically increase the strength of a piece of armor. The trick is activating the fluid's change of state. Since magnets large enough to affect an entire suit would be heavy and impractical to carry around, researchers propose creating tiny circuits running throughout the

The definition of sensitive items is anything that considered classified or a mission essential item. They range anywhere from protective wear, maps, patrol routes, nods (night vision goggles) or simply your weapon. The meaning of securing your sensitive items mainly is maintaining accountability for opsec (operation security), mission success and a soldiers overall readiness. If an item is lost and the enemy gets his/her hands on that item it could compromise the mission at hand or give them intelligence on the items we as soldiers use each day. Using habits and exercising the securing of sensitive items will make it possible for the soldier and his or her team to operate at the top performance. Operational security is process that denied valuable information to an enemy. If an enemy were to obtain the presented it could be used against our forces. Not securing sensitive items increases the risk of loss by being intercepted by unauthorized personnel. Every soldier must maintain accountability and positive control of all sensitive material to allow full use by them and anyone involved with the mission at hand while still maintaining operational security. Operational security can be compromised through the loss of sensitive items due to loss of equipment used for operational planning, or items used for support missions. Also depending on the type of sensitive item that is being classified it could fall under a different level of security as it is deemed so by the U.S. Government. The levels included in the term classified are restricted (public disclosure could have undesirable effects or do some harm), confidential (unauthorized disclosure could damage national security example would be compromising information that indicates the strength of armed forces or disclosure of technical information about weapons), secret (unauthorized disclosure could seriously damage national security) and top secret (unauthorized disclosure could…

As an officer of the law they face many dangerous in their line of work and guns are a big threat for them especially if the body armor does not fit the officer wearing it. More women also have started to join law enforcement, but body armor companies use male models, which causes problems for female officers and their use of body armor. Body armor based off a male body causes problems for females using the armor because it can be uncomfortable, heavy, and ill fitting. One officer being killed in the line of duty is too much, but most officers use body armor and the few female officers killed are not wearing body armor because the vests are uncomfortable, lack protection, and affect an officers performance.…

When a body or object moves, whether it be in air or water, it exerts a force and simultaneously encounters a resisting force from that medium. In sporting competitions such as swimming and athletics, drag and lift forces are constantly responding to the object or body’s thrust. There are many types of forces exerted by fluids that resist an implement or body trying to move through it. At the same time, technological improve- ments have enabled us to better use the specific fluid to decrease resistance; for example, better configuration of the dimples on a golf ball can improve its flight performance.…

Understanding the law is very important when assessing the use of force for personal protection. In the case of People v. McManus it was stated that “Defense of oneself or one 's relations, deemed a natural, inalienable right at common law, justified the use of force, making even homicide lawful” (People, 1986). If one is unsure of the local law in relation to force they should leave it to the authorities. Self-defense of one’s self against an attack…

The wear and appearance of soldiers in the United States Army are while in uniform should be neat. There should be no excess “things” in a person’s pocket but it should lie down flat. The person wearing the uniform should look neat and concise not drawing attention to themselves. Soldiers should look like a unit or group with everyone blending in not standing out because they look different. In the army it’s important to be part of a team and like teams that play basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse, softball, baseball, wrestling, and even chess teams. It’s important to wear the same thing. It shows unity and togetherness. This is important in the armed forces especially because of what they do. In the army, marines, navy, and air force soldiers are called upon to fight in the battle field. If soldiers cannot show unity by doing a simple basic thing of wearing the same uniform alike how anyone could expect them to fight and win a nation’s battle. This is why the army has proved a guideline of regulations for soldiers in the United States Army to wear and abide by. This regulation is army regulation six hundred dash one which covers the dress and appearance of army uniforms in any given situation. As a female in the United States Army have recently become acquainted with Army Regulation six hundred dash one by the urgings of my sergeants. In this army regulation I found out about the grooming practices allowed for females in the United States Army and what is out of regulation or what is commonly thought to be out of regulation. I hope that this will square me away as a private in the Army of the United States of America. Females and males cannot have faddishly shaved scalps with designs on them. It is not allowed for a female to have excess bulk in her hair even if this is her natural fullness. She would have to have some of the bulk removed so she would not look unkempt or unprofessional. The Army is all about have high standards and adhering to those standards.…

Despite their name, aerogels are solid, rigid, and dry materials and do not resemble a gel in their physical properties; the name comes from the fact that they are derived (composed) from gels. Pressing softly on an aerogel typically does not leave even a minor mark; pressing more firmly will leave a permanent depression. Pressing extremely firmly enough will cause a catastrophic breakdown in the sparse structure, causing it to shatter like glass – a property known as friability; although more modern variations do not suffer from this. Despite the fact that it is prone to shattering, it is very strong structurally. Its impressive load bearing abilities are due to the dendritic microstructure, in which spherical particles of average size 2–5 nm are…
