CHAPTER 5
ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOUR AT WORK

1.0 Case Study: Discipline at APS Company
Aliya and Zuraidah were the only two clerks handling payments from customers in the office of APS Company. They reported to the owner of the business. Aliya had been employed for 18 months while Zuraidah for 14 months. Both were college graduates, about 23 years old and single. By manipulating the accounts in a rather ingenious way that would not normally be detected, Aliya was stealing from account payments as they were received. During her third month of employment, Zuraidah learned of Aliya’s theft, but decided not to inform management, rationalizing that Aliya’s personal conduct was none of her business. Zuraidah did not benefit from Aliya’s theft, and the two of them were not close friends. Their duties allowed them to work rather independently of each other, each handling a different portion of the accounts. By the time the owner learned of Aliya’s thefts, she had stolen approximately RM25, 000. During investigation of the act owner learned that Zuraidah had known about them for several months because it was evident that the thefts could not have occurred for an extended period without Zuraidah’s knowledge. At the time of employment, both women were told by the owner that they would be handling money and strict honesty would be required of them.

This case is about the $4 million embezzlement fraud by an employee of a magazine publisher, and how the fraud was discovered. The type of fraud discovered was a billing scheme that was found on accident. A billing scheme is, “Any scheme in which a person causes his employer to issue a payment by submitting invoices for fictitious goods or services, inflated invoices or invoices for personal purchases.” 1 In this case, it just so happened that the new chief internal auditor decided to stop by the accounts payable department to collect a series of recently submitted invoices so that he could meet with the vice president to understand how the accounting codes work. In doing so, they found that a number of invoices had been forged. According to the 2010 Global Fraud Studies, “11% of the time, victim organizations either had to stumble onto the fraud or be notified of it by a third party in order to detect it.” 2 With coincidence one, the investigation revealed that the forgeries were coming from the painting operations in its facilities department, in which was overseen by Albert Miano. Miano started his scheme by creating false invoices for the jobs done by painters. He would not reinvoice exactly the same work done during a week, but he would make it look similar to where no one would ever become suspicious. The opportunity for Miano to commit fraud came into play when he was allowed to go and collect the approved invoices and insert his own replicated fraudulent invoices as approved. He also was the one who transported the invoices and collected…

This case study is all about a bank by the name of FMB&T. Recently, the CEO and President of FMB&T, Marshall Pinkard, received an e-mail from a Vice President of the company, Ayishia Coles, who also happens to be the company’s Chief Information Officer. Ayishia reported to Marshall with several frustrations. She was having problems with her job because she didn’t have clear cut responsibilities or authorities, which had caused her some trouble in how to deal with people who had come to her for IT solutions. She had expressed that employees from several departments had come to her with problems she could not understand because they were poorly described. She had also expressed that these employees that came to her expected immediate results, but when she tried to be an administrator or facilitator, her efforts were not responded to with open arms. The other departments’ problems seemed to all be very complex and required a lot of time for the IT department to fix, which irritated the other departments in the bank. Ayishia’s last frustration seemed to be that the IT department seemed to simply work in applications development and only had a responsibility to fix the problems of the other departments in the bank. She noted that the IT department had some good ideas for business strategies involving IT developments, but their ideas seemed to be shunned or neglected. Marshall seemed to agree with Ayishia in her request for a formal copy of her authorities and responsibilities, but also pondered the idea that maybe Ayishia had uncovered a major organizational problem throughout the bank.…
