Biz Cafe Simulation Analysis
In our Business Connections class, we used a simulation called “Biz Café”. This simulation activity took place in groups of three or four over the span of the semester. The simulation was a coffee house that the group made decisions on. Every week the group makes decisions regarding what should happen at the coffee house, i.e. hire/firing employees, wages, insurance, marketing, etc. Three days later the results of these decisions are posted and the group sees the results of the decisions they made, and the cycle continues. In my group specifically, as we progressed through the simulation, our decisions became more precise. We realized what decision triggered what result. Our group realized that to build a strong customer base we needed a good quality product, with low prices. When customer satisfaction started to decrease we chalked that up to not having enough workers. Therefore; we hired more workers and managers so that they would not have to be worked as hard. This simulation had some aspects that seemed very similar to real life business and other aspects that seemed almost the opposite. The overall concept of the Biz Café is sound, but when you break it up into individual pieces, not so much. For example, in …show more content…
Some people may think that is the easiest part but for my team, just getting together was fairly difficult. We also really had a hard time analyzing the results and deciding what caused each specific result. It was almost as if we were guessing what was going to happen when we made decisions. We needed to know why things were happening instead of just results. By far the best part of the simulation was seeing how business worked. Yes, this was just a game, but it gave the illusion of a real business. That is what was most important I think, for all of us to see what making decisions was all about was what was important and I think that is what was the best part of this

In this simulation I learned that a person would have to have a team to help make life changing decisions for a company. Decisions should not be based on one person solution. It takes time to come up with a strategy plan long or short to control the flow of money in a business. Any decisions that are made concerning the finance can make or break a…

The first situation the simulation provided me with was a successful brand that is facing declining sales. My recommendation was to focus on Lifestyle, Quality Engineering, Coolness and Price. My results from this were good, but could have been better if instead of focusing on coolness, I 'd chosen to focus on service instead. This would have allowed me to optimally position the product.…

Team Report and Team PowerPoint Presentation (D2L dropbox) at 800 a.m. on the day of your Recitation. (A) Team Project Description Scenario You recently inherited your grandfathers coffee shop, which is conveniently located in downtown East Lansing. The cafe offers many different kinds of coffee and tea, a full service bakery, and sandwiches, soups, and salads. Your grandfather first opened the coffee shop in 1952 and it was a local hotspot for many years. Although your grandfathers coffee shop was a local hotspot for many years, business has been steadily declining over the last five years. Although your grandfather was an expert at running the coffee shop, it is outdated. There are no computers in the store and all ordering takes place manually. Your grandfather had a terrific memory and knew all of his customers by name, but unfortunately, none of this information is located anywhere in the store. The family recipes for the baked goods and soups are also stored in your grandfathers memory. Inventory is tracked in a note pad, along with employee payroll, and marketing coupons. The Cafe does not have a Web site, uses very little marketing except word-of-mouth, and essentially still operates the same as it did in 1952. You will own and operate your grandfathers coffee shop, taking advantage of business practices discussed in our ITM 309 class to increase profits, keep the business running, and bring the cafe into the 21st century. One of your first decisions is to define a new business strategy for your grandfathers coffee shop and introduce IT to enable the strategy and enhance operations. Example IT improvements may include automating inventory updating and payroll, keeping track of customer information, creating a coffee shop website for promotion and offers, recording the recipes in a database, and offering Wi-Fi. Task The goal of…

The first simulation was not as well carried out- perhaps due to lack of research, while the second simulation went according to plan, and in correlation, the marks also increased. The report explores the various interactions within the group and within an individual during the two simulations and comes up with recommendations for future group work exercises. The report also finds that although the team was assigned a leader the team doctor possessed as much power, if not more. In addition, various team interplays and the use of a flat management structure are explored.…

The video Build a tower, build a team by Tom Wujec (2010) is very engaging, the information discussed correlated well with the text presented in Chapter Eight Team Dynamics. Both discuss how team building activities have been effective in helping the team learn to work as a cohesive group, promote creativity and facilitate better communication skills. Tom Wujec (2010) discuss the “Marshmallow Challenge”, an exercise where people are placed into teams to build the tallest tower out of spaghetti, tape, and a single marshmallow. Chapter Eight explains different team dynamics such as why people join informal groups and describe the “five C’s of member behavior in the effect teams. In the first day of the simulation, I learnt that when thrown into the water, I don't get nervous. Rather, I am happy to take a challenge and trying to do the best I can. Since I had no prior background in HR – I have deliberately decided to take this role. When we were asked to choose the logo for the company, after some negotiations the team agreed to take my choice. I learnt that I can convince people follow my ideas. As the VP of HR, I needed to work and coordinate with all other team members since my decisions relied on their inputs. In some cases, I challenged the number of workers or the incentives amount that other team member asked. I always gave reasoning and explained why I think differently. I think that the problem in our first simulation day was that we didn't set a strategy or direction. As mentioned in class, setting strategy is an important leadership behavior that in this case we failed to follow. Everyone tried to concentrate in their own department and figure out by themselves what they should do, without really sharing their insights with the other team members. This behavior correlates to the students assembling radio-transistors, mentioned in "The science of Team Success". As described in the example, we could have done better if we had worked together as a group, instead of working alone.…

As the CEO of an organization, one must make large-scale decisions on a regular basis in order to promote company growth, keep the employees happy, and achieve success. In this simulation assignment I was the CEO of Spectrum Sunglass Company, a company that provides its customers with high quality sunglasses. The future was looking bright because the market was growing, there was no pressure from competitive pricing, and people were being rehired after the recession. Spectrum had the opportunity to focus its efforts on creating new eyewear from more sustainable resources. If implemented correctly, Spectrum would be able to continue business with its largest account, BigMart, which constitutes for 30% of its revenue. However, not all members of the company were on board with the new idea. They believed that the company should focus its efforts towards getting back on their feet after the recession and not on implementing a new sustainability project. It was my job to convince my team that this was the right move. Unfortunately, I was not successful in doing so. I had some effectiveness in my efforts, but overall was not able to reach my entire staff.…

Café LUX* products are its own made coffee and baked cakes as well as its home-made food specialty ("Coffee Shop, Coffee Shops, Coffee Shop in Mauritius – Café LUX*" 2016). The product that is going to be served is the most important part of a whole plan. Therefore, good strategies need to be implemented to make sure the products are able to attract the needed target audience. In its franchises in Mauritius, Café LUX* has been selling the same products across its stores. The primary product strategy that is going to be used is that of standardisation. Standardisation happens when a common marketing approach is shared on a national as well as international basis (Whitelock 1987). Standardisation has been chosen as strategy as it is very advantageous…
