Biobutanol Research Paper
A biofuel is a source of energy that is made from living things or their products. Biobutanol, a four-carbon alcohol, is a type of biofuel. It has a higher energy than ethanol and can be used in vehicles without them needing modifications to their engines (1). Biobutanol is related to photosynthesis because the biobutanol can come from plants of biomass feedstocks, hence the name, biomass butanol (2). Biomass feedstocks are the plant matter that fuels are derived from. Biobutanol can be, in its first and simplest form, a plant that performs photosynthesis.
Biobutanol has been tested and works efficiently in cars as a mixture of gasoline and biobutanol, and there are multiple way to produce it (5). Biobutanol makes up 16% of the mixture, as

It has better qualities than ethanol, but is still more expensive to produce, which is holding it back. Source 8 states, “If you compared ABE (acetone, butanol, ethanol) yield to that of the yeast ethanol fermentation process, the yeast process yields 2.5 gallons of ethanol from a bushel of corn; with concentrations of 10-15% it becomes very clear why ethanol is considered a better alternative fuel source over butanol.” This means more ethanol than biobutanol comes from a bushel of corn. With scientists engineering cheaper solutions to producing biobutanol, like fermentation microbes that will last longer than normal, there is still chance that butanol will surpass ethanol. If biobutanol ever replaces ethanol, then there will be new opportunities to earn lots of money, by producing the right crops and selling it to biobutanol companies, or owning those companies. Jobs are available in biobutanol companies such as Butamax, who believe that biobutanol is hopeful. Full-time jobs like electrical and mechanical engineers, scientists, working at the plants, and more are available as the interest in biobutanol grows, and these jobs are continuous and important for companies to get closer to making better

    I have come to this conclusion based on three main facts that I found while researching. The first reason I found was that due of the amounts of ethanol that humans would need in order to keep up with the demand of our lifestyle. North America would need all crops to be specifically corn for ethanol production. This would lead to food prices sky rocketing. The second reason why this is not an efficient alternative is because its costs more than petroleum to produce. And the third reason why ethanol is not a useful alternative is because a new engine would need to be created so that it could run on pure ethanol. This is because as of now the majority of engines would not be able to run on the product of pure ethanol. There are also many negative effects that impact the environment, in regards to the production of ethanol. The first effect is that the reaction produces carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas that the world is trying to get rid of. The second negative effect is that shipping the corn around the world to be produced would require gas, which emits more bad chemicals into the world.
