Bicycle Thieves Reflection
Bicycle Thieves Reflection In the film Bicycle Thieves, directed by Desica, the use of realism is portrayed. This film is taken place in Italy during 1984; it revolves around the main character Antonio and his son Bruno. After getting his bicycle stolen from a man, Antonio goes on a quest with his son in order to find the bicycle he and his wife pawned in order to help him with work. In the end, Antonio becomes desperate for a bicycle because of the words a seer he had gone to see concerning his bike had said, “If you do not find it today, you never will”. With those words he became so obsessed in finding his bicycle that when he did not find it, he resulted in stealing another man’s bicycle. In the process of doing this, he sets a bad example for his son Bruno and gets caught although he is not pressed charges. Which is why the title of this film is called Bicycle Thieves, plural. This film represents realism because in life, there are bad situations that there is nothing you can do about. I thought it was unfair that Antonio had been the one to get his bike stolen and not many people had helped him capture the thief, unlike where at the end the man who Antonio tried to steal from had gotten a lot of help. But that is to go without saying that the term “life is unfair” is put literal. Although I had felt sympathetic towards Antonio most of the film, it really phased me when he tried stealing another man’s bicycle because it seemed he reached a point that had been unnecessary to do. As soon as I saw this happen, my sympathy left for Antonio and it turned into more of a disappointed feeling because Antonio had reached a new point of desperation that was not an example to be given to his son, Bruno. The film was portrayed realistically because life has many bad moments and unfair obstacles that drive you to be another person.

    * The first reason I believe that realism is exemplified is the way in which the story is set up: two men engaging in conversation, with basic and general mannerisms for the era and time which it takes place. Also, realism also usually reflects dialect and culture (as can naturalism) which is clearly portrayed. “Well, thish-yer Smiley…”(Lauter 58) and “I’ve got my opinion, and I’ll resk forty dollars that he can outjump ary frog in Calaveras county” (Lauter 59) are both examples of dialect.…

Realism is the idea that events are understood through logic/reason. In the Oration on the Dignity of Man, Mirandola states, “… thou mightest be free to shape and to overcome thyself.” This can be seen as realism due to the fact that in reality, humans from all walks of life must transcend their own problems and mold themselves in the image that they want to be. Also, Mirandola states, “… To thee alone is given a growth and development…” humans on the Earth go through stages of growth, such as childhood and adolescent, and development, socially, mentally, and physically. In the Moment of Man’s Creation, Adam, who is the lone figure on the left on the scene, physically looks like a human being. In the aspect of Realism, this connects with the key ides because it is the view of a human being as a human being looks like in reality. At the same time, Michelangelo has portrayed the Creator and the other figures- presumably angels- in an accurate representation of the Cingulate Sulcus portion of the human brain. Realism is present in that portrayal subsequently because the brain looks like such as the accrual human brain.…

The citizens of Leningrad during German’s siege of the city suffered through horrors that left them and their country forever scarred. Somewhere between the opulent officials of the Red Army and the cannibals roaming the streets of Piter were citizens like Lev and Kolya, one a Jewish looter and the other an Aryan deserter. After meeting in a prison cell they are tasked to collect a dozen eggs in exchange for their lives. David Benioff’s City of Thieves is a case study of their unlikely relationship which uses the inhumanities of a besieged Leningrad as a backdrop. The humor employed by the two protagonists as well as their ever-improving relationship is used by Benioff to contrast with the bleak setting in which the book takes place.…

This focused on a humanitarian outlook of ordinary people’s every day struggles. These were all shot on-location but throughout the films, it seemed like everything in them was staged. This was done in attempt to dramatize the subject’s daily hardships. This is shown most clearly in Gente Del as the narrator went into details about the lives of people living on barges, including individual scenarios, like the family with the little girl. Even in his film Sette Canne, un Vestido, everything said in the narration was highly dramatized. The narrator used whimsical words to describe what was going on, like “castle” and “miracle”…

Another example of how effective ending each episode with an overall message is, in the last scene in the episode, The Bicycle Thief. The episode begins with a question for all the fathers of the show: What is the key to being a great dad? Most of them gave simple answers such as: be your kid’s buddy or give them the freedom to be whatever they want to be, all except Jay. Jay could not think of an answer to say and even after a few seconds to think about it he still could not come up with anything. Later in the episode, Gloria asked Jay to help Manny fix the fan in his room, so they can get some bonding time. As they worked, Manny talked about how excited he was for his weekend with his father at Disney World and how great his father was, much…

Realism first became known in 18th century France after the Revolution, denying the romantic predecessors and focusing more on direct observation of everyday life. Realisms use of ordinary people and places, making things fine art that ought to not be seen and inadvertently coinciding with socialist agendas and working-class uprising made it a quick target of adverse reactions (Finocchio, 2000).…

Since I am Brazilian, I decided to choose this movie to watch for this essay topic. When I first saw this movie I was really surprised with it; the storyline and plot left me in shock and I mean that in a good way. The story took place in the rural or “favela” areas in Brazil. In these areas there is a heavy crime rate. This movie depicted true events on how life is in the favelas of Brazil. There is always someone dying almost every day in Brazil because of gangs and money. I always like a film with a good storyline and also I liked how this film was realistic. I liked the acting a lot too, they all did a great job. I could go on an on about how good this movie is, but I’m going to stick to the point and talk about the lifestyle in Brazil. This movie was shot before Brazil’s economic rise, so back then, Brazil was in a recession, the economy was bad and not only that but gangs and crime rate was at it highest in Brazil. You see children in the streets not wearing the cleanest clothing, and majority of them are negativity influenced with the gangs and crimes which make them want to grow up and join gangs and go out to fight. You see very bad and unclean houses; no one really cared about the slum areas. Especially the government in Brazil (back then). I also like how they actually used the actual “City of God’’, which is a slum area in Rio de Janero. The film makers did a very good job with casting too, before I watched the film I read that the actors themselves were actually born in favelas and they knew how the lifestyle is. That means that they could act out their characters easily for this film. I liked how this film gained international popularity; it got to show the world how life was in the slum areas in Brazil. I’ve done some research and I saw that this film was nominated for big awards here in the United States and in other countries too. This made history in Brazil for one of the top grossing Brazilian films in the…

Now, Life is Beautiful is a very serious film. There are constant reminders of what time period the film is set in. The time of Hitler, a period of great racism towards the Jewish people. Guido knows very much about the current events, but continues to shelter his young son. We are reminded of the times with the painting of the horse. The words "Jewish Horse" are painted onto a horse that was also painted green. All of the images of the concentration camps make our spines chill as we realize and remember that hundreds of thousands of human beings had to live, and die in camps much like the one in the film. The countryside at the beginning of the film is also a great realistic moment in history—Mussolini riding into a town, the townspeople greeting him with open arms.…

Realism was an art form, prominently created in France, where life was depicted as it truly was, nothing exaggerated, amplified, or idealized. Art in the 19th and 20th centuries created art for “art sakes”. As opposed to the depending on patrons to fund artist’s works such as the church and nobles, they had a sense of artistic freedom and hoped to make money by selling to the general public. This is a distinct contrast to the Renaissance and Baroque periods when the elite appointed artists to create art specifically for their taste.…
