Biblical Allusions In Lord Of The Flies
Lord of the Flies
Lord of The Flies by William Golding focuses on the most obvious topic, which would be how greed leads to the end of what was good. Alought that maybe to main topic there are other themes that could be found throughout the book such as, the corruption of innocence or the use of symbolism to compare to the stories of the Bible to the book. Golding shows the similarities of the characters and island in Lord of the Flies to the characters and locations within the Bible.
The story starts off with a desert island that has a supposed ‘scar’ made from the plane that crashed there. The island is the first comparison made with the Bible “ In Lord of the Flies Golding draws heavily on Genesis…”(van Vuuren 4) and in Genesis there is the Garden of Eden and that is what the island was compared to in the book. Although the island is the representation of Eden, it is ruined by the crash from the boy’s plane. This brings another point as to how the Garden of Eden is similar to the book’s island. “ Ralph, the representative of civilization and democracy, lives rules, acts peacefully, and follows moral commands and values the good , who dramatically reveals the condition of civilization and democracy in Golding’s time”(Li 119). From the description of Ralph in Lord of the Flies he is automatically recognized as the main character and in like most books the main character is the hero or positive leader in the book “ He is purporting to break the rules and in the newfound freedom, but the irony is that cannot escape has accustomed regime”(Watt 178). This talks about while Ralph walks about the island he tries to be happy about not having any type of structure from an adult but he later finds out that structure is needed in order to keep everything
