Bible Meditations For Every Day By John Kersten
A. Substantial works in Theology, Bible, Ethics, etc
I am a full-time student and taking many courses during semesters. Thus, completing reading assignments and responding to these readings are my priority daily. This semester I am taking: Catholic Social Teaching (CTU), preparing for my Comprehensive Exam (CTU), and taking Encountering the Living Word (LSTC). These are a big load for me.

B. Novel, Book of poetry, full length play, or book of art
B1. Bible Meditations for Every Day by John Kersten is a good source for spiritual growth and preaching lessons because the book connects to real situations and stories with appropriate biblical passages at the end. Again, short and inspiring are great from the book.

B2. The Little Book of Saints

Set in the small country town of Birendulee, Michael Wilding's, The Altar of The Family is a dismal illustration that narrates the tale of an isolated and rather innocent boy's passage to manhood. Constantly falling victim to his father's belittling, David Murray, the protagonist of the narrative is coerced into sacrificing his innocence for his rite to passage into manhood, in what seems to be 'the altar' of his 'family'. Through a third person point of view limited to David's thoughts and feelings , Wilding induces the reader to understand deeper themes such as that of social conformity and pride vs individuality and the difficulties faced by those who stand out in a society.…

The birth of a child seems natural to the physicians that help with the delivery process. Yet, religious midwives believe that it is a natural miracle caused by God. Unlike naturalist, the Christian, Fall, and Redemption (CFR) approach adopts the Godly and natural view. According to author Angela M. Sabates, the naturalist approach is that reality compromises material substances, and the immaterial (God, soul, mind) either does not exist or is irrelevant to an empirical investigation because it cannot be measured. The unseen is a hoax that cannot be proven real. Evidently, the reality of naturalism consists of observable facts and solid material explanations. Life origin, the purpose of life, self-seeking tendencies, fundamental need for…

The Rise of Christianity by Rodney Stark offers a sociological view of the growth of Christianity during the first four centuries A.D. The book provides a new perspective on how Christianity won the West. According to Stark, early church historians and the New Testament itself claimed that Christianity grew in number despite an unsuccessful plight to the Jewish population of Rome. Stark rejects many of conventional claims such as this one, and claims that Christianity grew rapidly because of miraculous demonstrations that drew large numbers of converts. Mr. Stark uses a quantitative approach to explain his theories on how Christians could have gained so many converts without miraculous methods.…

My understanding of the gospel prior to this class was that God sent his only son to earth so that we may be forgiven of our sins. The gospel to me was also about Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. As I was growing up I also learned about the great commission. While I learned about the great commission I realized all Christians are required to go out and take the gospel and share it weather as a missionary in a foreign country or the work place such as a school teacher. I grew up in the church and went to a small private Christian school where I was immersed in the teaching of the gospel. The gospel to me was very important as I was growing up. Although as I entered into high school I fell into complacency and did not carry out the gospel as I should have. Once I became an upper level classman in high school I realized I had become complacent and Matthew 28:16-20 became a very important verse in my life.…

Particularly in Psalms 46, the geographical images are key to promoting Jerusalem as a sacred city. For instance, the first stanza claims that the people are not fearful of any natural disasters, for God is always present to protect them. The fact that the passage refers to God as the “God of Jacob” twice shows the importance of Jacob’s role in the Bible. In fact, Jacob has a dream in which he “saw a ladder reaching to heaven, with angels ascending and descending on it, and heard the Lord speaking from above it” (Eliade 1959: 26). This event demonstrates sacred space, as it marks a moment in which man is able to transcend and singlehandedly experience the divine. In addition to the ladder as a metaphor as a central point or link between heaven and earth, Jerusalem contains other features that act the same way such as the mountains that surround it. In all three stanzas of Psalms 46, God is claimed to be their refuge no matter what obstacles the people face; similarly, the mountains can be represented as God’s protection.…

In the movie The Gospel of John the director gives the audience a clear description of what the Gospel of John is about and how the characters really act. Some of his decisions to me were spot on, however on occasion he would have his own views of how a character should act. One decision that I was in full support of was how he portrays Jesus as a kind, loving friend to all the citizens of Israel. The actor who play Jesus provides an effortless dictation of the word for word Gospel, and at the same time gives the audience an inspiring interpretation of how Jesus really acts. However at some points I was taken back with his harsh behavior towards the Pharisees, but as the movie progresses his emotions seem more accurate with his message of salvation.…
