Schools are always encouraging students to get involved in extra curricular activities and volunteer work. Many celebrities lead the way by contributing time and charitable donations to various organizations. Among the top five celebrities who donated in 2011 were actress Jamie Gertz and her husband Antony Ressler, musician Herb Alpert, actor Mel Gibson, director, producer, and writer George Lucas, and writer Nora Roberts. These celebrities demonstrate positive messages to their fans about the importance of giving back to society.

At age 31 and rated sixteenth in Forbes’ top celebrities, Beyoncé Knowles has always made volunteering part of her everyday life. Beyoncé contributes to twenty-three charities and foundations and has established two of her own. In the same year she created her organizations, she also won best contemporary R&B album, best female pop vocal performance, and song of the year. The artist states, "I've always felt that you should give because it's what you can do to help…When you look around at all that's wrong in the world, the need to do something, no matter how big or how small, is clear." My favorite characteristic about Beyoncé is her modesty about her achievements.
